I always liked DJ Shadow but he really won me over in the Scratch documentary; when everyone else was sounding like an idiot he was in a record store basement waxing philosophical about the fleeting nature of fame and time... it was real nice.

speaking of DJs, mix master mike and q-bert are $$$$$.....saw MMM right when he joined the beastie boys......he played at the dream palace on frenchmen.....it was pretty ridiculous what he did with those turntables.....

[The Unrest Cure]

UNKLE suffered from James Lavelle's many tinkerings. If foolishly attempted to make a pop product out of "underground" music. If you doubt that, just look at the list of singers they used. The best part is the R2D2 bleeps and Star Wars samples at the opening.

DJ Shadow's early work was nothing short of stunning, but since then has stagnated. "In Flux" was groundbreaking work, a collage of sound that sounded like what hip-hop SHOULD be and isn't. I remember when Mo Wax released it back in '96 (or was it '95?) it changed the way I thought of music as social commentary.

i agree that his early work is amazing. everything he did with Solesides/quannum is awesome. i can't listen to his new stuff, it's too Hyphy.

i saw him at Bonaroo this year, and the first hour was all old work, then when he went into his Hyphy work, i went back to my tent.

i saw him with the entire quannum crew at Twiropa a few years ago, and he stopped the show and said "look yall, this is hip hop. this is my crew. they are my family. if you dont like them, you dont like me" this was in response to a group of people in the audience heckling a little known (at that time) MC named Lyrics Born. i was impressed with Shadow for doing that, because the hecklers kept shouting "we want shadow!" and booing Lyrics Born.

im anxiously awaiting a new album with the whole Quannum crew. As a producer and beatmaker, hes on the level with Dangermouse and Dan the Automator.

I havent heard his newest stuff, but a good friend of mine who is a bigger Shadow fan than I am, described his latest album as 'awful.' Sad. I almost dont want to check it out
