In response to the latest push to get rid of the "Redskins" name, a Letter to the Editor in the Washington Post asked:

Are there no more important issues these days? There are many NFL team names that may offend thin-skinned and hypersensitive people: Do atheists hate the Saints?

So what does S-R think?

h/t Gambit

The author mentions almost all the nicknames of NFL teams. It's sarcasm. He obviously doesn't want the Redskins to change their name.

Are there no more important issues these days? There are many NFL team names that may offend thin-skinned and hypersensitive people: Do atheists hate the Saints? Do socialists despise the Patriots? Are short people (sorry, “vertically challenged”) offended by the Giants and Titans? Do environmental activists dislike Chargers, Jets and Steelers? And surely animal-rights extremists cannot appreciate the Bears, Bengals, Broncos, Cardinals, Colts, Dolphins, Eagles, Falcons, Jaguars, Lions, Panthers, Rams, Ravens and Seahawks.

a ridiculous comparison, as a Saint is an aspirational figure in the Christian tradition and a Redskin is a racial epitheth. Same for all his other comparisons.

Reasons for changing Redskins name:
1. It's racist.

Reasons to keep Redskins name:
1. Money.

I'm not up in arms writing letters to the NFL to get rid of it, but changing the name is the right thing to do. Saying "don't we have better things to do" is NOT a valid excuse. What better things does the Redskins have in the offseason? They aren't a branch of government who will be denying starving children medical care if they hire a PR firm and graphics designer to come up with a new logo. How hard was it for the Hornets to change their name? Pretty painless.

This is an easier decision than Ole Miss changing from Coronel Reb to the Bear. At least you have an argument (although I think it's pretty weak) that there is some cultural significance to the Confederate figure. Redskin is a racial slur towards a people who were subjected to a ridiculous number of injustices by people governing from...WASHINGTON.

The only possible comparison I can think of would be the Washington Negros.

At first i didn't really like the name, then some old fans explained it to me and i didn't care anymore. Now of course i love it, and couldn't care less even if i'm 100% atheist

To say that comparison is a stretch is elasticity at it finest.

Just to clear the air: traditional skinheads aren't racist. It's actually black culture. Look it up. Racist politicians in England hijacked the style. It comes from 50's and 60's raggae. White boys couldnt grow the dreads, hence skinhead.

Nonetheless, good point. I don't see "redskin" as a derogatory term. I've got friends that are Native American; they ain't mad bro.
