Doctors: Infant cured of HIV at UMC - Local News - Jackson, MS | NBC News

JACKSON, Miss. —Doctors at the University of Mississippi Medical Center said they have cured a baby suffering from HIV and the breakthrough is reverberating worldwide.

"There is excitement around this," said Dr. Deborah Persaud of John's Hopkins Children's Center.

Doctors across the country are heralding the medical breakthrough in Jackson.

"We have, perhaps inadvertently, but in fact, cured the child," said Dr. Hannah Gay, associate professor of pediatrics. "We don't know yet what to expect with this patient because she's the first of her kind."

The hospital will not share many details about the 2-and-a-half-year-old who was born HIV positive, saying only the child is from the Mississippi area and was born to a woman with HIV.

I'll believe it when it's peer reviewed, signed off on by the leading medical journals, and they can release a paper outlining the details of what happened.

pretty much my feelings exactly but at least it is cause for some cautious optimism. I am still not convinced that Magic Johnson doesn't hold the key to being cured. When we first started hearing about it wasn't it like a 7 year life expectancy?

MONEY

or

Makes one wonder if he even has HIV or ever had it. Doesn't it? What better way to bring awareness to a disease than when a high profile person has (or supposedly has) that disease.:idunno:

Yep, same here. I'm very much doubting them.

HIV and AIDS are related, but are two different things. It is certainly possible to keep someone who is HIV positive from progressing to AIDS.

The fact that Magic was wealthy (which gives him access to the best doctors and care) and became infected in early 1990s (when we made big strides in antiretroviral regimens) have helped him from developing AIDS.

As for the news out of Mississippi -- it certainly exciting, but it's not a "cure" for AIDS. At least not yet. It suggests that very early antiretroviral treatment can "cure" infants who are born HIV+, that's all.

It's not the first "cure" identified -- back in 2007, a stem cell bone marrow transplant cured an HIV+ adult male. These are exciting cases, but still a way off from a real applicable cure or vaccine.
