Drawing inspiration from 'ghosts,' undrafted cornerback De'Vante Harris finds a home on the Saints roster

By Joel Erickson -- Advocate

De'Vante Harris always wanted to be just like his father.

Rod Harris starred as a wide receiver at Texas A&M, returned kicks for three years in the NFL with the Saints, Cowboys and Eagles, then spent seven more years in the CFL.

All his son ever wanted was a future in the family business.

When he was little, Harris terrorized the sons and daughters of his dad's CFL teammates in locker-room pickup games. Then he'd go home to the Dallas area and tag along with his older brother, Rod Jr., to play football against kids five years older. He had to go home long before the games ended; Rod Jr. used to walk him halfway, tell him the neighborhood's dogs were loose and watch his little brother sprint the rest of the way.

The obsession never wavered. Harris kept a photo of his father in a Saints uniform as his screen saver for years, then retraced his family's footsteps by going to Texas A&M.

Only one thing eluded him.

He is young and will make some mistakes, but I can live with those mistakes because I know he will be giving it everything he's got on every down. You have to like this kid's toughness. He and Crawley put in some serious work during the offseason to make this squad, and they should be proud. Hopefully it's the beginning of a long career for both of them.

I really liked hearing about this young man's approach, and the way that his support system seems really solid. I hope he does big things in the NFL!
