Where Drew Brees wants to position the New Orleans Saints is not with a .500 record, which it can achieve Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, but something beyond that.
The Saints for a third consecutive season hold a 3-4 record, and in each of the last two seasons, they won the game needed to improve to 4-4.
What happened after those victories is what has the Saints quarterback preaching the perils of having false hope.
"You are constantly fighting human nature in this business," Brees said. "And that is you probably overreact when you lose and you underreact when you win, and we just want to make sure we're not that team that's up and down, win, loss, win, loss, because we fall in the trap of human nature. We want to constantly be trending upward and improve."
