Drew on MT and all the looks.... (1 Viewer)

Right anyone who has watched a lick of Drew Brees already knows he throws to the open guy.

The issue is what happens when you have a situation like the Atlanta game, where No One was open. The whole Offense just comes to an abrupt halt.

7:53 is a perfect Film example of why people have been concerned

Saints are in a 3 WR 1 Back 1 TE look with MT isolated at the top, Tre'Quan and Ginn out wide at the bottom, Cook as the 3rd receiver inside, and Kamara in the backfield.

Right away MT is not an option on this play because Atlanta rotates a Safety over the top, and has a Corner trailing him underneath. Ginn and TQS run a switch concept, which is where Brees knows he needs to look from the snap because of the look Atlanta is giving, but neither guy gets open and Brees then has to look to Kamara who is also bracketed by double coverage underneath, and then Cook who was jammed within 5 yards by the LB. Eventually he just has to throw the ball incomplete towards a covered Cook instead of taking the sack.

7:53 is a terrible example, it doesn’t prove anything, the reason that play didnt work was because the Saints didnt pick up a stunt correctly, Atlanta only rushed 3. The left side of the line didn’t play well, which is really what cost the Saints offense

Whoever was running down the seam was wide open.....if Brees throws it over the LBers it's a 20 yard play, if the reciever gets the ball as he opens up early in the route and makes the safety miss it's a TD.

Brees had 4 seconds before the pressure forced him to make a decision, in the NFL that's plenty of time and he was still able to get to the 4th read on the play.

You are right The Offensive line had a poor day that game but not every failed drive was on them there were multiple coverage sacks, and Atlanta had an incredible Defensive game plan that revolved around disguising their coverage to look like man presnap but actually be zone and to take away Brees' first two reads. It kind of underlyed a weakness in the receiver group that outside of MT the rest of them don't identify zone coverage quick enough and adjust their routes accordingly to be on the same page as the QB. Deuce Windham actually did a film study on his YouTube channel last season titled " Why aren't the Young receivers more consistent?" And not surprisingly a big reason was Zone identification.

Lol no go watch it again, there’s an unblocked pass rusher bearing down on drew after just a couple of seconds, and that’s with eight in coverage. He didn’t “get to his fourth read” he didn’t find anyone open in the tiny window the protection breakdown allowed

how are you going to say “he got to his 4th read” when he’s gotta start running two and a half seconds after the ball is snapped with 8 men covering 5 receivers? There has to be more time.
