For all NN’s & DD’s, don’t get your panties in a wad. The following is just a LIMITED sample to compare the Saints’ recent 3-game stretch (defense) with the best 3-game stretch vs. the run for the ‘00 Ravens & ‘85 Bears.
When you look the numbers, keep in mind that the threshold for playoff teams‘ defense has ALSO been giving up 17 pts. or fewer per game.
Turnover ratio on the PLUS side is an absolute must!
Finally, a good playoff team yields an average of 300 total yds. or less. All 3 teams met the above criteria.
You should also note that during each team’s BEST consecutive 3-game stretch in rushing yards allowed:
a. Saints surrendered fewer rushing, passing and total yds. than the ‘85 Bears.
b. Saints surrendered fewer rushing yds. than BOTH the ‘00 Ravens and ‘85 Bears.
c. Saints’ point differential was better than both the ‘00 Ravens & ‘85 Bears.
Here are the numbers (...again, this is just a small sample, but it is an indicator that the Saints are definitely trending in the right direction):
1. ‘85 Bears (weeks 5-7):
a. vs TB
(1) total yds allowed: 373
(a) passing yds: 346

b. vs. SF
(1) total yds allowed: 183
(a) passing yds: 116
(b) rushing yds: 67
(2) pts. allowed: 10
c. vs. GB

(a) passing yds: 223
(b) rushing yds: 96
(2) pts. allowed: 7
2. ‘00 Ravens (weeks 8-10)
a. vs. TENN
(1) total yds allowed: 191
(a) passing yds: 101
(b) rushing yds: 90
(2) pts. allowed: 14
b. vs. PITT
(1) total yds allowed: 231
(a) passing yds: 111
(b) rushing yds: 129
(2) pts. allowed: 9
c. vs. CIN

Not looking for anybody to crown our arse right now. You can have a “flash in the pan” for a game or two. But once you start stringing together 3 or more... ...you’re onto something!
Bottom line: The way the Saints have been playing on defense has to be encouraging for all WhoDats! Let’s hope & pray that team health holds up all the way to Lombardi Gras.
