Hopefully Davenport comes around and plays up to his potential this upcoming season. Would hate see this guy become a bust. On the other hand Carl Granderson really improved this past season. Let's all hope that he progresses even further this upcoming season.
Will Smith's life ended way too early to senseless violence. So here's to one of the best DE's the Saints ever had. I have more of him in another book. This is just during the Payton era.
Here are some LB'ers we've had over the years under Payton. We're better at getting them through FA than we are at drafting them. And sometimes we stunk in FA too. The jury is still out on Baun since he only had limited playing time. Alonso was pretty good while he was here until he got injured. Manti Te'O wasn't that bad either. What can you say about Stephone Anthony besides BUST!!!. Hou'Oli Kikaha could never stay healthy enough to see the field for an extended period of time. Michael Mauti made some plays for us for for a couple of years. James Laurinaitus was pretty much wore out before he got here. Didn't last the season. Davis Tull was another one we drafted that was 1 and done. Anthony Spencer was another FA that we signed that got injured and never saw the field, gone during training camp. Curtis Lofton was a pretty good FA. He was a big downhill thumper, was not a sideline to sideline LB and below average in coverage.
What gets me about Martez Wilson is that the Saints drafted this guy and played him out of position for his whole tenure here. This guy was a MLB and he was never played at the position he played during his college career. The Saints played him at SLB & WLB, but never at MLB. He became a bust, but was he truly a bust? We will never know because he was never played at his natural position.
We should have never let Malcolm Jenkins leave. I didn't know what the people in the front office were thinking back then. I'm sure glad they are making better decisions now. He left and went on to be a star. Jenkins started out slow this past season, but really turned it on as the season progressed and it looks like he's still got a lot left in the tank.
I really love what CJGJ has brought to the Saints secondary the past 2 seasons. I like his swagger and he will only get better. I don't know what happened with Saquan Hampton, he was released last season. I guess with emergence of CJGJ he became expendable. Vonn Bell was a very good in the box type of Safety. But always looked a little lost in coverage, he did make some plays, but a lot of times he arrived a little late to make a play. With the signing of Malcolm Jenkins it made it easier to let Bell walk.
We have Kenny Vaccaro. He had a great first season, everyone thought he would have been the SS we had been looking for. but after that his play was inconsistent. He'd have a good game and then a bad game and so on.
Who can forget Roman "The Neck" Harper. Was the leader in sacks for a Safety for a couple of seasons. Vinnie Sunseri, poor kid never stood a chance. Got injured his first season and then he was gone.
What a bust Byrd turned out to be. Thought he would have come here and dominate. He was supposed to be the premier FS in the FA market that year. I think once he got paid he didn't try anymore.
