Eagles' cap hit for trading Carson Wentz doubles what Saints are paying Taysom Hill (1 Viewer)

The New Orleans Saints will play the Philadelphia Eagles again in 2021, but they won’t be facing quarterback Carson Wentz. Philadelphia reached an agreement with the Indianapolis Colts to trade Wentz in exchange for two draft picks, moving their embattled former franchise quarterback just 20 months after he inked a $128 million contract extension.

That leaves a salary cap hit of more than $33.82 million on the books for the Eagles, which is referred to as dead money — accounting for players no longer on their roster. And for the folks keeping score at home, that dead money cap hit is more than twice what the Saints owe Taysom Hill in 2021.

Hill signed a one-year contract extension last summer that carries a $16.159 million cap hit this year. That’s become fodder for lazy analysis in NFL circles given the Saints’ daunting salary cap outlook, but even a cursory look around the league shows Hill’s value. ...
