Well, you have to look at it from a historical perspective, like long hair on Spartans or Maori tattoos. The Japanese man bun (chonmage) was meant as a means to steady a samurai's helmet on his head during battle. It also was a status symbol; you had one of those, everyone knew you were a samurai.
