Left side has been the strong side for Saints lineman Andrus Peat

By Joel Erickson -- Advocate

The man the New Orleans Saints drafted to eventually take over at right tackle has lined up just about everywhere so far — everywhere except center.

Every time Andrus Peat seems to get settled somewhere, an injury hits the offensive line and forces the Saints to shuffle the big second-year lineman somewhere else.

With Peat currently occupying the left tackle spot normally reserved for the injured Terron Armstead, the shuffling likely isn't about to stop any time soon. The Saints believe they have found the key to making the moves a little easier.

"I think the one thing we've recognized is he's much more comfortable on the left side than he is on the right side at this time," offensive line coach Dan Roushar said. "He's played both guard and tackle for us, and the one thing you notice is when he's been able to play in one spot for a period of time, like all guys, you see confidence."

For some offensive linemen, learning to play the other side of the line is a little bit like a catcher trying to make the move to second base: It's possible, but it's far from easy.

The left side of our line will beast for several years to come.
Now let's get a dominant pass rusher for the right side and then start building the right side of the Oline.

I'm happy for Peat.
Completely unselfish player.

But I thought that Peat was a complete waste of a draft pick that should be cut or traded.

Haha I guess maybe the expert negative nancies were wrong again.

I doubt it. There is still a minority that has a bad opinion on Ingram for his first couple injury marred years.

I just want to get some productivity out of him considering the high pick.

Good article excerpt for 1 thing. The writer says playing the left side and switching to the right is like changing from catcher to SS. lol that's not even close. More like switching from 2B to SS but catcher would be like him going from the OLine to the TE position. Remember this is not the coach saying this as he article makes it look. Switching sides is not nearly as complicated as some have made it sound but for most will take some time to get the technique down. Don't understand that comparison very much but to each their own.

Peat needs more time on the right side which he hasn't had. He already has enough to work on being a young raw player so obviously the left side as of now he is most comfortable with since his whole career was played on that side. No reason he can't turn into an all pro RT just as easily as he can at LT. Once they can settle him into 1 position he can call home and get to work he will be fine with whatever side it may be. IMO Peat is a prototype RT and exactly what you want on that side with Armstead being a prototype LT. When we are able to upgrade the OG position in the off season Peat needs to stay at RT with the exception of Armstead going down. I'm confident there will be no more flip flopping him from OG to OT once they commit to moving him and getting the best OLineman on the field. If we had another OG playing at an identical level as Strief then Peat would be playing RT full time. We are simply putting the best unit on the field which is why Peat has been playing OG except for when injuries have hit. Excited for the future of our OLine to turn into a dominant group with the addition of 1 stud to the interior. We have surrounded Brees with great young weapons at all of the skill positions and are literally 1 stud OG away from being a great offense top to bottom.

So Peat on the left, permanently, sounds like the plan. Career at LG, subbing in at LT whenever Terron is hurt.

I see us drafting or signing a free agent RT in 2017. Probably RG too. Thoughts?

My hope is that Jahri's injury bug is behind him and he anchors the right guard spot for another 2-3 years.
I think we'll draft a right tackle, but I wouldn't be opposed to a young guy that's a restricted free agent trying to get his second contract.
I'm so done with over paying free agents.

Imagine if they would have kept him on the left side since training camp? He would have progressed even more. I am happy he is playing good. The O line has not been the issue as of yet.

I think we go 7-9 again this year, but let's pretend we go 4-12 and are in complete rebuild mode. What could we get for Armstead? And is it something we should even consider? Can Armstead be moved to RT?
