Establishing the run vs the Falcons is the most important aspect (1 Viewer)

I agree, but I have a feeling this will be a shootout.

Just read Snead and 7 other starters possibly inactive:no:

Though I'd assume assessing the Atlanta roster and gameplanning against them that we likely don't need them to beat em. SP owns ATL and last years roster when we whipped them at this point was IMHO weaker.

The Saints have been at or near the top ten in time of possession throughout Payton's tenure.

See Raiders game when the Saints should have run the clock out instead of going score for score. Don't care about the metrics. I just watch the game. If he runs the ball and keeps the d off of the field, the game is over. Just my 2 cents but I'm no expert. I just stayed at a Holiday Inn last night.

You sure you watched the game? What are you talking about running the ball and keeping the defense off the field?
We had a 10 play, 43 yard drive that started in the 3rd quarter and ended in the 4th quarter that resulted in a missed FG.
Oakland answered with a 4 play 60 yard drive that resulted in a TD in just 1:49.
We answered on our next drive with a 6 play, 69 yard drive that resulted in a FG and took up 3:11.
Oakland answered with a 2 play 75 yard drive that took :16 and resulted in a TD.
We come back with a 3 play, 84 yard drive that took 2:23 off the clock and resulted in a TD.
Oakland then put together an 11 play, 75 yard drive that took off 5:16 for a TD and two point conversion.
We then had a 6 play 34 yard drive that took up :47 seconds that resulted in a missed game winner.

So, 4th quarter time of possession in that game was won by the Saints.

We had a two possession lead going into the 4th quarter, scored 10 more points on offense and still gave up the lead. Then the offense put us in position to kick a game winner and we missed.

Losing that game had nothing to do with the offense.

... OP brings back memories of Saints vs Eagles 2006 playoff, and that final 8+ minute drive in the 4th quarter.

DEUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE!!!!

Darn.. something in my eye...

Amazing drive. We just don't have Deuce.

We have Ingram who has 48 carries, 170 yards for a 3.5 ypa average when we are leading and a horrible 7 first downs on 48 carries with less than 4 minutes to go. Despite forum myth, Ingram does not get stronger in the 4th quarter it is his 2nd worst quarter and he does not get better with more carries since he averages less than 2.2 yards per carry after he reaches 20 carries.

Almost half of Ingram's career yards have come when we are winning by 15+ points where he is a stud and averages over 5 yards per carry. It's the rest of the games where he isn't very good.

But yeah, let's pound the rock.

I posted this 2 weeks ago, no one seemed to agree with me

"How about this for a change up, establish the running, screen , dump off pass etc and do some 5-6 minute drives. Several on them not just one. I don't care what anyone thinks of Patty ice, he can get it done, keep the falclowns off the field. "

The most important aspect is keeping Julio Jones and Ryan in check.

He has 21 carries for 88 yards giving him a 4.2 ypc. Hard to "get stronger in the 4th quarter" when he carries 10 times a game. average 2.5 carries a quarter. And with us having one tight end and Sneed out for the game I don't think we can totally depend on the passing game. Just double Cooks and Thomas and the Saints can't do anything then. We have to establish the run and stick with it. Not for 12 rushes a game but in the 20's. This defense can keep us in the game I believe without having the sacrifice the run game. Just put in Turner as tackle eligible and just power run. That kills time. We can always go to the passing game if the defense can't hold up.

Without Terron the running game is going to struggle to get to 3 ypc.

Run for 2 yards.

Run for 0 yards.

Incomplete on 3rd and long.

Punt.

The Saints are a pass first team. If the passing game gets going, the running game will have some opportunities. If you are hoping to see the Saints try to pound the ball running, you are watching the wrong football team.

Why can't we run the ball behind someone other than the LT? Obviously whoever subs for Terron won't match his ability, but there are other spots we can try to run through to avoid that weak link in the chain.

Also, people seem to misunderstand what I'm proposing.

I'm not suggesting we force the run. I'm saying that getting the run game going in an efficient matter is beyond crucial for all the reasons I stated. If we are passing at will all over their defense, then yeah, obviously keep doing that. But I don't think getting into a shootout will be our surest path to victory. If we can't get the run game going, we won't be able to close out the game.

But ultimately, like Payton has often said, you take what the defense gives you. If they sell out to stop the run, then sure pass all over them.

I just can't help but think that our lack of balance has come back to haunt us in these extremely close games.
