New Orleans, meanwhile, defied expectations by selecting a wide receiver with the Saints' first pick, even though many fans had hoped for a defensive prospect.
Oakland, as expected, makes LSU's Russell the overall No. 1 pick
Russell became the school's first player since 1960 to be chosen with the first pick in the draft. Running back Billy Cannon was taken by the Los Angeles Rams that year, but opted instead to sign with the Houston Oilers of the American Football League.
The closest LSU has come to the top pick since then was quarterback Bert Jones, who was chosen by the Baltimore Colts with the second overall pick -- behind John Matuszak of the University of Tampa, who went to the Oilers -- in 1973.
