My observations from the New Orleans Saints' 38-32 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday at the Georgia Dome:

--The Saints have lost their share of games in recent years, but rarely have they been embarrassed. The Saints were never in this one. Forget the futile 19-point fourth quarter. That was strictly window dressing. This wasn't just a loss. This was a beatdown. Whatever momentum the Saints gained from back-to-back wins against the Cardinals and Bucs disintegrated in this ugly performance. Definitely not the way you want to go in to the offseason.

--The Saints' defense completely unraveled in the first half as the Falcons scored touchdowns on all five of their offensive possessions. The Falcons averaged 11 yards a play and completed scoring drives of 68, 75, 75, 76 and 75 yards in the first half. The Saints appeared helpless to thwart the onslaught.

--I've seen a lot of bad Saints defense over the years, but the start of this game was about as ugly as it gets. The Falcons scored a touchdown or gained a first down on each of their first six plays. They scored three touchdowns in nine plays.
