Falcons get 4 compensatory picks (1 Viewer)

Wow what a crock. Kelvin Hayden? Eric Weems? James Sanders...i dont even know who he is.

I swear the NFL WANTS certain teams to win. Try as you may NFL, but it just aint happening.

they received picks for those guys? I have no idea how they choose to hand those picks out

If you sign more FAs than you lose you receive none.

If you sign less FAs than you lose, you receive one pick for every one player you lost in excess

The compensatory pick formula is kept a secret but there's enough educated speculation out there to usually get in the ballpark of how many and what picks a team will get.

4 picks for a bunch of no names does seem like a bit much. We know that it's some combination of number of players lost, what contracts those players go on to sign, playing time, and how many people you sign in return.

Well, kinda. We also know that dollar amounts of free agents lost vs. gained matter, as well as playing time and post-season honors. But that is the basic gist of it.

Pretty simple math!!! If the team loses more free agents than you sign ...then you get picks!

The number of picks you receive is based on one, single, sole thing.

Number of free agents lost - number of free agents signed. = picks

That's it. The falcons lost 4 more FAs than they signed, hence 4 picks. It's no more complicated than that.

The VALUE of those picks is a complicated formula. But that's why they got three seventh round picks, it was three no name players. The fourth rounder was for Curtis Lofton.

No that only affects the level of compensation. Not volume.

It doesn't matter if you lose 3 all stars and replace them with 4 scrubs, you would receive no draft picks.

By the same token, if you signed 2 all stars and lost 4 scrubs, you would still get at least 2 7th round picks.

The basic calculus for who gets picks and who doesn't is very, very simple. The level of those picks can be more nebulous, though even then it's generally easy to guess within a round or two what the pick will be, but who receives picks and who doesn't is extremely easy to kow.

3 7th rounders?

Likely throw away picks that won't make the team.

Playing time and post season awards also are factored in.
