Famous encounters. (1 Viewer)

Jimmy walker, eddie murphy, sammy haagar, and stevie wonder all ate at luthers BBQ across from the cajun dome before their shows, I still have Sammy's beer bottle, also met Michael Jordan twice. And had back stage passes for Rush and met Alex and Geddy.

Went to school with Harry Connick Jr (grade school and again in HS) saw him a few times in NY

Was naked in a dance dressing room with Mikhail Baryshnikov

Took class a few times with Bill Irwin

Showed Brett Favre where the snake was in the NO aquarium

But the ‘biggest’ was playing basketball with wynton Marsalis in buenos Aires
We were both touring there at the same time and happened to share a translator
One think led to another and we found a local gym and played a pickup game with his band
Then hung out at the club after our shows

My family lived in Hendersonville TN for several years when I was growing up. My pop and I used to see Johnny Cash at the KFC all the time. We also used to see Waylon Jennings at the A & P most always with a case of beer under his arm.

I have a ton. A lot of athletes due to a few random connections and life events growing up.

My favorites are probably:
- A certain ex-Texas RB who may or may not have played for the Saints briefly bought me about $300 worth of booze for a party I was having when I was 20. I asked the receptionist at the place I worked to hook me up, went to her house to pick it up, and they were chilling there with my booze, I guess she had him go get it. I knew they were dating/hooking up or whatever but wasn't expecting to walk into it. Cool guy. Super nice. A bit shy. Exactly what you'd expect him to be from his public persona.

- A certain ex-Texas WR hung out with our group on 6th street for about two hours, buying us a ton of drinks on those pre-paid debit cards, because he was trying to mack on one of the girls in our group. He had a stack of those prepaid debit cards, all of which he said had $100+ on them. Did not get the girl.

- More recently, I went through the whole passport process side by side with the Undertaker at one of those passport expediting places. Walked in and it was just him, his wife, and their little kid who was maybe 3. Kid ran up and started jumping on me and the Undertaker apologized to me all sheepishly. LMAO. We walked to and from the courthouse together and had some small talk. He was cool, his wife was cooler. I didn't recognize him until after it was all done. I asked the passport guy if he looked familiar and he was like "yeah that was the Undertaker". Definitely was keeping it low key - hat down over his eyes, sweat pants, as non-descript as possible. He is a big tall guy, more than I expected, but looks really old and beaten up. It was just kinda funny and wholesome to share random inane small talk ("where are you going with the passport?", "how old's the kid?", etc.) and do a really mundane task with some guy who is famous around the world (and not realize it until afterwards). I like to think he appreciated just randomly shooting the bull without being called out.

- Best one is as a ten year old, riding along with my dad as he played a round of golf with Willie Nelson, Darrel Royal, and three or four other carts of just random, non-golfing stragglers who I guess were their buddies. Guys, girls, you name it. I'm not going to go into great detail on that one, but it was exactly what you would expect it to be. I didn't realize some of what was happening until many years later. This was out at Willie's crappy goat track course in the hill country, so Willie owned the course and could do whatever he wanted. It ruled.

Probably the most famous for me was doing the meet and greet for Alice Cooper when he played at the Saengar in NOLA in 2015 I think it was. I was in the 2nd row. One of the people in front of me was really cool, turns out he is a mortician from Mississippi that has met all kinds of rock people. He even had Alice sign the back of his mortician certificate which I think is awesome.

Bob Dylan - at The Fly
Nicholas Cage - Just out on a walk
Robert Plant - Rock and Bowl

I worked at Tips in the late 80s - early 90s and one Sunday afternoon Robert Plant hung out at my bar during a fais dodo and we talked about all sorts of stuff - including the Rock n Bowl. I had a feeling he was interested and was going to check it out.

I was in a restaurant in San Francisco and went to take a leak. It was a tiny restaurant with one bathroom. There was already a guy waiting to go in next so I took my place in line. I glanced up and realized the guy waiting in front of me was Robin Williams. I stared at him probably a split-second too long and he looked at me and smiled with a smile that was both friendly and also conveyed a “yes it’s me, and no I don’t really feel like talking to anybody while I’m waiting to take a leak.” Hahaha

At the 24 Hours of Daytona back in mid-2000s, we were headquartered in the press building (or whatever it was called). It was late, nature was calling so I go into the bathroom and luck out because one of the bigger name drivers was giving interviews so NOBODY is in there. I sit down and strain like everything to get that demon out.

It turns out, it wasn't a demon but a spirit. When that long, loud flatulence ended, I said "Oh that felt good" and immediately heard someone start laughing. I emerge from the stall to see Tony Stewart still laughing.

My wife hates when I tell that story.

I also saw George Jones renting pornos at Greens Video in Florence, AL. My dad told me to go get his autograph, but I was too shy.

Also have gotten to cook for Willie Roaf, Brett Favre (butt crevasse), Laura Dern, Diane Lane, Manny Fresh, and William Sadler (Sadler is a super nice guy and so is Manny) since then. What are some of your stories of encounters with famous people?

Ive met lots of famous folks, but not sure if it ‘counts’ since most of it was in the course of working.. a lifetime ago i made a living in the entertainment industry (hey, i was young and i needed the money!)

But it’s funny that a couple of you guys have mentioned Manny Fresh, he actually bought the house i grew up in in Destrehan.. i dont think he lives there anymore, but when he moved in, it was amusing to see the reaction of the neighbors when he proceeded to park a half dozen exotic cars worth more than each of their homes in the driveway, and on the street. .. and i bet they loved all the parties too! :)

I’ve shaken hands with President Clinton and Daddy Bush

Was on a plane with George Will

Saw Donny Osmond at Disney World

I’ve met the Alison Dean who played the sister in coming to America and Malik Yoba from New York Undercover

I saw Spike Lee in New York, he walked right past me

I also met Marcus Samuelson at his restaurant in Harlem on that same trip

My best two are when I briefly met Steven Spielberg in DC when he was filming Minority Report

But the best one, and the only time I’ve ever met a celebrity and been in slack jawed, wide eyed wonder was when I met Gordon from Sesame Street (I was a kid, but still, it blew my mind - this guy knew Big Bird and Grover!)
