Fan Loyalty.. who is a fan of the New Orleans Saints and not a fan of Drew Brees? The Face of the Franchise has won more hearts than games but even the majority of the QB1's games were memorable and epic. Drew Brees, a true legend and hero. On the field, most days, #9 is an inspiration to the team and fans but, this day, the offense was struggling. So, this story is not about Drew Brees but it's about the QB's fans and friends.
The Super Dome can hold only a fraction of the entire Drew Brees Fan Club but sometimes it only matters who your friends are. Drew had a fan and friend on the sidelines and that guy also is the team's Head Coach. Sean Payton has benefited from working with his starting QB since day one of the HC's tenure. The combination of HC-QB has worked to benefit Payton in his career and helped him become a fixture of Louisiana Sports Culture, if there is such a thing. And SP can usually gain a pass for a bad play because the Saints have generally benefited from Payton's ability to manage a football team. But, on this stage, this time was somehow different.
Saints fans saw the interception versus the Rams in the previous year and could not see past the blown pass interference call. This season's short playoff "run" did not end with a Drew Brees interception or a #9 sack-fumble... instead the road to the Saints one-and-done playoff appearance started with with the Zimm Wizard programming his defense to pressure the future HOFer up the middle (a pocket passer's poison pill). And use speed off the edge to create gaps between the OT and interior linemen. Add attacking the gaps with pressure from free rushers on passing downs and defensively you can neutralize a potent QB-WR combination, like Brees-Thomas. Great plan, but the Saints had a counter attack -- Taysom Hill.
Taysom Hill's ability as a runner made the Vikings respect the run and freezed Viking DBs closer the line of scrimmage. The Payton arsenal of plays includes Read-Pass-Option plays, specifically designed and implemented to take advantage of defenses who are overplaying the run. If Minnie Soda does not respect the run and create gaps with their pass-rush schemes, then the RBs and THill gash 'em with size and speed. Plus, nothing works to help the Saints defense like a Super Dome crowd that has been pumped to a roar by Taysom Hill. Sean Payton had the coaching chess piece (the Knight is a trickster) and the offense to make the move but, instead, SP left the King to struggle against Zimmer's defense and the strategy did not work.
It will take another 16-game season for the Saints to make it back to the post season. Coach Payton is a big fan of Drew Brees and he is, likely, also his friend. SP coulda added another SB to Brees's career.. and he woulda if he had used Taysom Hill.. but there is a difference between what the HC shoulda done and what he did do. But, again, he did it for his friend. The window for Super Bowl appearances may not have closed for this Saint's team but Payton seems willing to let that window close for the chance to see his friend hold the trophy in a rain of confetti one more time.
Good coaches make bad calls all the time.. and that's all I'll say about that.
GO Saints...
