FBI opens sex-abuse investigation in the Catholic Church in New Orleans (1 Viewer)

I remember about 6 months ago my 93 year old Italian, very Catholic grandma telling me how things are so messed up now & how kids need religion in their lives and I replied “you mean like more catholic priests who fork little boys or something else?” She got awful quiet.

It was a late summer afternoon, Sally Dale recalled, when the boy was thrown through the fourth-floor window.

“He kind of hit, and— ” she placed both hands palm-down before her. Her right hand slapped down on the left, rebounded up a little, then landed again.

For just a moment, the room was still. “Bounced?” one of the many lawyers present asked. “Well, I guess you’d call it — it was a bounce,” she replied. “And then he laid still.”

Sally, who was speaking under oath, tried to explain it. She started again. “The first thing I saw was looking up, hearing the crash of the window, and then him going down, but my eyes were still glued—.” She pointed up at where the broken window would have been and then she pointed at her own face and drew circles around it. “That habit thing, whatever it is, that they wear, stuck out like a sore thumb.”

Like they care.

Looking at the history of the Catholic church, it is incomprehensible to me that people still adhere to that criminal organization; yet, people still associate themselves with them because of blind faith.
Because despite the men that do harm, there is still good in the Church. Criticizing folks who have that faith in whichever aspect of their church life that they do is not helpful and is as divisive as politics itself.

I have just gotten to a point with her where I can’t take any more of her outdated boomer ideals and I let her know about it.

When that apartment building collapsed in Florida last year, she was mad that the mayor switched over to Spanish in the briefing & went on a tangent about how they need to speak English in America. That’s when I asked her if her parents & aunts and uncles spoke English when they arrived here fresh off the boat, how long it took them to learn and asked if she remembers being called a dago wop, etc growing up & why she thinks it’s okay to behave that way towards others when she knows what it’s like. Again, she had no defense/response.

Anyway, not to derail the thread. Her unwavering support of the Catholic Church is just as aggravating.

Worth repeating…..

Yup, I feel the same way….they are knowingly supporting an organization that supports and defends pedos….I have no idea how folks can do this knowingly and still profess to be good “Christians”…..I detest organized religion in general….

I think, for a lot of people, if they didn’t see it then it didn’t happen. Or it was other people in other places. Same stuff happened with scouting.

Reminds me of my time in the Air Force. Airman Snuffy would get into trouble, the the defensiveness would start. “Airman Snuffy is a great guy, a good mechanic, everybody likes working with him. Can’t we not be too harsh with him? Don’t want to hurt his career over some little thing. “ Invariably we find out he had a DUI we didn’t know about, was arrested while home on leave for domestic abuse( beat up his mom), and has violent arguments with his girlfriend because he drinks too much too often.

This is the insidiousness of religion, that people will overlook heinous acts because of "faith". It cannot be disputed, that in fact the Catholic church is a global organization that actively aids, abets, and enables child molesters; IMO, that alone should be grounds for any reasonable person to run the other way; and that is just the tip of the iceberg with the Catholic church.

Any other organization that aids, abets, and enables child molesters, most people would like to see burnt to the ground.

And I am not saying you should denounce Christianity; there are other Christian alternatives that come without child molestation and abuse.

As for any good that could still be in the church, the late Christopher Hitchens once issued a challenge: "I challenge you to find one good or noble thing which cannot be accomplished without religion. It is impossible; you cannot do it. " To date, AFAIK, there was a lame attempt by William L. Craig to answer the challenge with "loving god", but you don't need a god in order to love. So the challenge still stands. And personally, I prefer good and noble things to not come with pedophilia and child abuse.
