This was done so that their would not be a polarizing agenda to bring voters to the polls in 2014 for the mid terms. The democrats are thinking if they can get more seats in 2014 then they can push the gun ban in with little backlash felt.

The only way that happens is if the Democrats get sixty in the Senate in addition to a majority in the House.

Not going to happen in a midterm election.

You never know, there's a whole lot of stupid in the Republican Party. If the republicans can't get there act together to defeat a socialist president, they most certainly can loose congress as well .

This was done because there aren't enough votes for it. Which includes a large number of democrats. Certainly those democrats are worried about reelection, but they'll be just as worried about re-election in 2015 as they are now.

It was dropped because it won't pass, and it won't ever pass until there is a more dramatic culture shift. Whatever they can't push through now is no more likely, and possibly less likely, to be pushed through in 2015.

Problem is.... Whenever some idiot moron uses anything that looks like an assault weapon again, this will get new life.

I'm pretty sure the high capacity mag ban was dropped along with the assault weapons ban.
They are still trying to ban those. Which is kind of funny because there are already tens of millions of those already on the market. So if some nut really wanted to get his hands on one they'd have no problem doing it.

But it sounds good so props to them for accomplishing absolutely nothing. The voices of the American people won this round.

To be honest, I don't think that's a possibility.

Think about it -- Newtown is about as bad as the country has seen when it comes to a mass shooting with an "assault weapon." Classrooms of first graders getting gunned down by a Bushmaster with high capacity magazine isn't enough to shift public opinion regarding the AWB.

While humanity's capability of cruel and vile acts is bottomless, I have a hard time thinking that in today's political climate, there is any sort of event that could re-shift the AWB into a politically viable option.

And as LSSpam points out, even if the Dems retake the House and get 60+ seats in the Senate in 2014 (which isn't happening to begin with), the AWB most likely won't be getting passed -- the new Democratic Congressmen and Senators would be from moderate to center-right districts and states, making them unlikely to support the ban. I'm sure Feinstein and other members of the Senate might try to push it if the Dems do pick up 60, but it doesn't have a realistic shot at passing -- there's reasons why it didn't get re-passed, even when the Democrats held 60 seats in the Senate, the House, and the Presidency.

This kind of thing is never going to happen. It's just the same kind of bugbear that a total handgun ban used to be. Back when the Brady Bill was going through, folks were certain they're coming for our handguns to sieze them next. The ferocity of liberal oppression is never as strong as the right imagines. It doesn't have killer instinct for gun issues, just an occasional war of words.

No one even pretends to threaten or to be scared of the total handgun ban now unless they're off their rockers there.
