Film review: Saints defense lost battle on the edges against the Chiefs

By Nick Underhill -- Advocate

Kenny Vaccaro didn’t feel the same as he does after most games.

“A lot of it looked like it wasn’t great edge setting, guys were running free, we were chasing the ball a lot,” the safety said. “I’m not even sore because it felt like they weren’t playing in the box. It wasn’t a physical game. It was played on the edges.”

Kansas City didn’t have much reason to go anywhere else, especially during the first half. The team was able to rip off run after run around the ends with great success. So, with the Saints struggling on the edges, there wasn’t much reason to pound the ball up the middle.

This vulnerability in the New Orleans defense has been evident at times this season, particularly against the Atlanta Falcons. The Saints have allowed 402 yards around the tackles and to the ends this season on 69 rushes, an average of 5.82 yards per carry, this season.

Maybe the SR poster was right who said that Vacarro was calling out Cam Jordan with his post game comments. Cam is responsible for setting the edge and seems like he didn't get the job done. We also saw a lot more Kruger against the Chiefs, and he didn't appear to be nearly as effective as Edabali was.

I still can't tell if its Jordan. I noticed Jordan a few times and he looked like he was playing hard. One thing is for sure though. We need more attitudes like KV. If there were better players around him, he'd be a pro bowl player. Look at Malcolm Jenkins. Dude was barely average his last few years here.

It is impossible to "set the edge" in a base pass defense. Nobody is assigned to do it.

This is what Pete said was the biggest weakness on the Saints defense 3-weeks ago. Pete said that we had no lateral speed with our LBs so offenses were able to get to the edge all day long.

I'll tell you what the Defense did do, they gave us a chance to win the game.

Cam is hardly a 'repeat offender' on film though, so that doesn't really make sense.

Agreed. Jordan's words make him seem an unlikely target for the comment to be intended for.

“That’s what I’m going to focus on, more pressure on the quarterback, making him more uncomfortable in the pocket,” defensive end Cam Jordan said. “There were times when he flushed out. And at the same time, we did do a good enough job in the first half to contain him. That’s something I take personally.
