Growing up, I loved the Saints. Come playoff time, my love for football did not end with our season. And instead of choosing a surrogate team, I rooted for certain players to go far in the playoffs. Barry Sanders is my favorite player of all time; two other guys I always rooted for were Dan Marino and Brett Favre.
Let me be the first to say that two years ago, I thought Favre had nothing left; considering the amount of interceptions he threw in a two year span. I was beggining to get aggrivated by the is he retiring/ is he staying mantra that the media ran with. I did not care for him speaking his opinion about Javon Walkers holdout. It was simply none of his business. If I were his boss, I would have been upset when he criticized the FO for not making a splash in free agency and getting Moss. Going into last year, I never imagined the Packers or Favre would have the kind of year they did. And going into this season, especially after last, I never thought he would retire any time soon.
I love the idea of him going out on top. I have always admired Favre and felt the same kind of ping in my gut as I did when Marino retired. Favre is saying he is mentally burnt out. I believe him, but I think there is more to it. He announced it the day after NE resigned Moss, which may have played a very small role, but I doubt it had much of a difference. I think what really got to him was how he cost his team the superbowl against New York. You saw the same thing versus Dallas earlier in the year. Instead of relying on his offense and what has been successful all year for his team, vs Dallas and NY Brett reverted back to his days of youth and tried to do the same things he did in his early years. He doesn't have the same talent around him, and obviously he basically gave both games away. I think he got antsy, knowing this was probably his last chance, and panicked once he realized he couldn't do it on his own and was losing because he wasn't trusting his teammates as he had all year.
I don't mean to piss on his memory or take away from his greatness; I just remember having these thoughts specifically during the NYG championship game and the Dallas game. There is no replacing Favre, but Aaron Rodgers showed against Dallas that with the team the way it is now, all you have to do is play withing the system. Favre simply came to the realization that in the biggest moment, when he has made things happen in his youth, he can no longer do it from nothing and he cost his team in that big spot. I think this is what burnt him out mentally, the fact that in a big spot like Dallas for homefield or NYG, he loses his cool and tries to force things becuase he knows he doesn't have long left to play.
I love Favre, and watching him add more numbers to his records would have been nice, especially considering he has the body for it, unlike Marino who was falling apart when he hung up his cleats. But I respect Favre even more for retiring once he lost his passion or confidence in himself. I just wish he would have beaten Elway in the superbowl. I never liked Elway. I have no good reason to dislike him, its just a matter of opinion. I did root against the Falcons though.
