Growing up, I loved the Saints. Come playoff time, my love for football did not end with our season. And instead of choosing a surrogate team, I rooted for certain players to go far in the playoffs. Barry Sanders is my favorite player of all time; two other guys I always rooted for were Dan Marino and Brett Favre.

Let me be the first to say that two years ago, I thought Favre had nothing left; considering the amount of interceptions he threw in a two year span. I was beggining to get aggrivated by the is he retiring/ is he staying mantra that the media ran with. I did not care for him speaking his opinion about Javon Walkers holdout. It was simply none of his business. If I were his boss, I would have been upset when he criticized the FO for not making a splash in free agency and getting Moss. Going into last year, I never imagined the Packers or Favre would have the kind of year they did. And going into this season, especially after last, I never thought he would retire any time soon.

I love the idea of him going out on top. I have always admired Favre and felt the same kind of ping in my gut as I did when Marino retired. Favre is saying he is mentally burnt out. I believe him, but I think there is more to it. He announced it the day after NE resigned Moss, which may have played a very small role, but I doubt it had much of a difference. I think what really got to him was how he cost his team the superbowl against New York. You saw the same thing versus Dallas earlier in the year. Instead of relying on his offense and what has been successful all year for his team, vs Dallas and NY Brett reverted back to his days of youth and tried to do the same things he did in his early years. He doesn't have the same talent around him, and obviously he basically gave both games away. I think he got antsy, knowing this was probably his last chance, and panicked once he realized he couldn't do it on his own and was losing because he wasn't trusting his teammates as he had all year.

I don't mean to piss on his memory or take away from his greatness; I just remember having these thoughts specifically during the NYG championship game and the Dallas game. There is no replacing Favre, but Aaron Rodgers showed against Dallas that with the team the way it is now, all you have to do is play withing the system. Favre simply came to the realization that in the biggest moment, when he has made things happen in his youth, he can no longer do it from nothing and he cost his team in that big spot. I think this is what burnt him out mentally, the fact that in a big spot like Dallas for homefield or NYG, he loses his cool and tries to force things becuase he knows he doesn't have long left to play.

I love Favre, and watching him add more numbers to his records would have been nice, especially considering he has the body for it, unlike Marino who was falling apart when he hung up his cleats. But I respect Favre even more for retiring once he lost his passion or confidence in himself. I just wish he would have beaten Elway in the superbowl. I never liked Elway. I have no good reason to dislike him, its just a matter of opinion. I did root against the Falcons though.

Len Pasquarelli wrote a column on espn.com the other day, and it fully describes how I feel about Brett Favre. It basically says that since he lost the Super Bowl against the Broncos in 1997 he has had a bunch of average years. For 11 years he was on the decline, and he still seemed to get all this media love. Why? Because he is fan friendly? Big deal, there are a bunch of football players that were and are fan friendly. I just don't understand all the love he gets. He really stayed in the game much longer than he should have. The man has many records, and I credit that to the fact that he has played so long. Any qb who starts for 17 years and has average season stats for over 11 of them will break records.

Essentially, I think Brett Favre played too long, and got a free pass from the media, and fans alike because he won a Super Bowl 12 years ago, and was average the rest of the way. Not to mention, at one time he was addicted to pain killers as well.

I just don't get it.

Dude, how old were you when he got help for pain killers? He has been missing 30 inches of intestine and plays QB in the NFL. At least he was man enough to say he had a problem and got it fixed before he won his Superbowl. It isn't that he is fan friendly, its that he acts like a kid playing a game; and its plain to see on his face. That is, and has always been refreshing. Bretts best WR was Sterling Sharpe, his best RB was probably Levins during the SB year, and his best defense had Reggie White for a few years. He has played for 16 years with mediocre teams that have failed to attract free agents and let their best players leave in free agency consistantly. In all honesty, what talent has the guy had to work with? He survived a few different coaching changes and still came back to show he still had the arm to have a top 5 probowl season.

I really could care less for Len P and ESPN. They are the ones that glorified him in the first place. Any QB who starts for 16 years has to be good to do so. If the Panthers won the SuperBowl last year and David Carr played the next two years as he has in the past, he would not get 16 years of chances. Brett has had two really bad years, and he followed them up with one of his best last year. Len P also likes to take credit for things that aren't his.

I agree with you, pjgaryjr. I have a tremendous respect for Brett. I could see the joy,for playing the game, that Brett had.

I am as big of a Saints fan as anybody, but I think that there is a general disregard for players who aren't Saints, by some on SR( not everyone, but some).

Thanks. Many don't know Brett wanted to go to USL and was turned down by Nelson Stokley, or that Brett wanted to be drafted by the Saints becuase they were his favorite team growing up. I consider him an honorary Louisiana boy, and feel a kinship to him. He is modest and open as a person. Also, his play epitomized the things we did in the backyard with our buddies. Many attempt to improvise like him, but fail miserably. He changed the game, and deserves a spot in Campton, even if he didn't break Marino's records.

How could you not be a fan of this guy? even if he was terrible(far from the truth), i would still like to watch him play for his enthusiasm and guts.

rickys fan, why in the **** do you have an Aaron Brooks picture as your avatar?

Quoted for truth.

The media did overdo the "I love Brett Farve" thing to a point that it turned many sour on him. They did it to me with Michael Jordan. But I could never deny MJs talent. Yes, Farve did play for a long time and has a lot of the records because of that. But don't forget he was the league's MVP three times in his prime. I don't think anyone has matched that. So it wasn't just his Superbowl win.

Threw his teammates "under the bus" in the meantime("This team isn't as good as my other teams"<---I heard that one a lot... ,"Those ints will go down as mine, but they weren't all mine" <-- after a 5 pick playoff game) and held his team back in the past 3 offseasons... with a don't call me, I will call you attitude, while chastising teammates for doing the same thing(Walker)... I think PFT has it best with his nickname "Lord Favre". Oh and even his name bothers me FAVRE said aloud is FAR-VE? I don't see it... Can some explain to me why it is not said FAV - RE

To me, he is the best QB of all time. Forget the records and awards and all the brass. I have never seen anyone play the game of football with as much passion and enthusiasm as Brett Favre. I really think he is the last of a dying breed of football player. Not afraid to get hit, not afraid to speak his mind, not afraid to bark orders at his teammates, not afraid to get in ANY defensive players face. He's tough, rugged, humble and a REAL football player. The NFL has already changed and #4 retiring just makes it official now. JMO

I'm from MS, went to the same college as Brett at the same time and watched him play for USM and the Packers......who cares ...he is not and never has been a Saint. Retire and go away. See you in 4 years when everyone has a Brettgasm to put you in the hall of fame. Until then, he can go drink excessively, take prescription drugs, cheat on his wife, and shoot animals in the woods. Again, this guy is NO hero. Just a good football player. See ya in 4 years for your tear filled speech.

The records are due to his 17 years in the league, not because he was that good. But, what about 3 MVP's? They count for something.

I really liked watching Favre, but if I were a true GB fan, I'd be on one heckuva roller coaster ride. Also, if he had that same career in NY, he would not be getting the love that he has gotten in GB and may not have stayed in the starting lineup for too long with some of those games/seasons.
