It’s awfully hard to find proper context when one NFC title and perhaps (likely?) Super Bowl title were straight-up stolen.

That changes the entire narrative.

It really can’t be overstated how much that impacted the overall narrative of this “version” of the Saints from a historical context.

That missed penalty - at a minimum, leads to another Super Bowl appearance. Regardless of how that game turns out, that’s at least an appearance in the ultimate game.

That debacle is a black eye on the entire NFL, and the media largely ignores it entirely or glosses over it. That ending is portrayed as the Saints choking and the Rams seizing and opportunity and winning the NFC.
It’s awful and it sucks... and it’s unfair... but the folks who write the history have made sure that this story goes down largely with the Saints (and their fans) as the villains and sore losers.

The narrative of 2018 has definitely been shifted by the media to put the blame squarely on the Saints.

The media says things like, “The Rams dominated that game!” “Drew Brees played a mediocre game!” “The Saints defense allowed the Rams to drive down and tie the game!” “The Saints had the ball in OT and Brees threw a pick!”

Those are all things I heard this season by national sports media whenever that “no call” was mentioned in reference to the Saints being “choke artists” in the post season.
