I was completely unaware of this event. This is one of the most fascinating articles I have read in quite a while. The newspaper's presentation is excellent.

I had never even heard of Lumbee Indians until I moved here. They are a significant portion of the population in these parts. That is why UNC-Pembroke was able to retain Indians as their mascot when others, such as ULM, were not not. It seems like the biggest majority are named either Locklear or Chavis. Sean Locklear of the Seattle Seahawks is part Lumbee & is from Robeson County.

Thanks Jan. I knew only a little about the Lumbees, about their difficulty getting recognition as a tribe and the theories that they were mixed with members of the Lost Colony and related to the SE TX and SW LA Redbones, but I had never heard of the KKK event. That was an interesting read.
 
Good read. General Benjamin O. Davis, who once faced down a KKK rally in his dress whites, would be proud.
