Kindly explain yourselves. You say that Pierre Thomas is unproven, yet, let's look at the stats:
Number of games played by Pierre Thomas: 12
Number of games played by Rashard Mendenhall: 0
Who's unproven now?
You could make the argument that, as a 1st-round RB, Mendenhall is a safe pick that would solidify our running game...
Cedric Benson, Cadillac Williams, Chris Perry, William Green, T.J. Duckett, Michael Bennett, Trung Canidate, Curtis Enis, Robert Edwards, John Avery, Lawrence Phillips, Tim Biakabutuka, Ki-Jana Carter, Rashaan Salaam... well, you get the idea.
Then again, Pierre Thomas doesn't have the proven track record of a 1st-round RB; after that, it's rare to find a good RB.
Ryan Grant, Maurice Drew, Ahmad Bradshaw, Brandon Jacobs, LenDale White, Jerious Norwood, Marion Barber, Michael Turner, Chester Taylor, Clinton Portis, Travis Henry, Brian Westbrook, anybody that played in Denver, Tiki Barber, Corey Dillon, Justin Fargas, Ahman Green... well, you get the idea.
Bottom line: This draft class has the most depth at RB we have seen in years. It will be easy to get a good one later on if we need one. Remember how often guys come in after a starter goes down and flourish? A good o-line with a decent passing attack creates a world of opportunities for less-gifted backs. However, no matter how good you are, a line that can't clear a hole for you and a stacked box isn't going to let even the greatest superstar produce much. We have many, many needs; RB is not one and certainly not for the first round. We may need to address depth later on, but not in the first.
Also, this forum was in love with Pierre Thomas last year; what happened? What did he do to disprove himself? In his 1 and only start he became the first Saint to ever go 100/100; doesn't that earn him another start?
