Fairley bounces back to lead defense

It’s been a bit of a roller-coaster season for Saints defensive tackle Nick Fairley, and after some sub-average performances in Weeks 13-14, he really bounced back nicely in Week 15. Fairley led the Saints’ defense with four total pressures—including one hit—on 33 pass rush attempts, and he also chipped in a stop (a stop is a solo tackle which constitutes as a loss for the offense, given the situation). Cameron Jordan chipped in three more pressures—including a sack—and David Onyemata contributed two pressures on just 11 pass-rushing snaps. Ken Crawley allowed two of three passes targeted towards his man to be caught, but in an offensive shootout, he limited the production on those two catches to just 18 total yards.

Nice to see. That D-LINE is now missing just one more piece. An elite pass-rushing weakside DE.

we got some real good pieces in the last draft. Everyone and rightfully so talk about Thomas/Bell but man Onyemata has been good. Especially for someone who a lot of people thought was a pretty raw talent he has been a solid contributor this year

From a PFF perspective, it has been his best game... but when u think about it, it impressive for a guy coming from a Canadian college who discovered and who discovered football late.

For anyone who cares, Vonn Bell also landed himself on PFF's 10 Worst of the Week. Nice to see some defenders played well. I think Crawley could end up being a pretty good find and may pay dividends next year.

Yeah he way underestimated the speed of those ARZ WRs... One of those things you just can't really fully appreciate from watching tape. Those guys can really fly.

If Crawley and B.W. Webb continue developing alongside a healthy Delvin Breaux and Sterling Moore we could have a strong unit next season.

Not to mention Swann and P.J. Williams (will he come back?) coming back. We have a lot to be excited about for the next couple of seasons on the defensive side of the ball. If we can hit on an LB to accompany Ellerbe and Robertson we should shape up nicely.

Thanks missed that. True that wasn't his best game despite that FF... but did not think he played that bad.

It’s tough to identify much that Bell did right in the game against the Cardinals, and that’s with forcing a fumble at one point late in the game. Bell earned severe downgrades in coverage, giving up a touchdown and 50 yards on the five plays where he was the primary coverage defender, but he also missed two tackles, was flagged twice for jumping offsides (as a safety!) and was blocked out of the play by wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald on a Cardinals rushing touchdown.

Maybe Kyle Wilson too.

Von Bell got beat on several deep routes. His grade would have been even worse if Palmer hadn't overthrown a wide open receiver that got the best of Bell. Webb was chewing him out after giving up a TD you could see the frustration.

He's had his ups and downs. Put it like this...bell has had a chance at 1 other sack that got nullfied by an Ellerbe penalty and dropped at least 3-4 INT's. Snuffed out run plays, and even ended drives by himself making back to back plays on 2nd and 3rd down. He's had his occasions being late on some plays but for a Rookie S the kid has been everywhere.

Sunday wasn't a great game but he's popped up on PFF's top graded defenders on the Saints Defense on at least 3 separate occasions this year.

Compare that to Anthony and he was graded high 0 times last year. Not sure he even pulled in an average grade once. He was pretty much below average the entire year. I think Bell at least has 1 80.0 grade and if not all 3 are in the 70.0 range.

He got beat in man coverage playing the slot against two lightening fast WRs.

He is a safety after all. I guess Allen was forced to play him there because of injuries.
