Athleticism and ability got Akiem Hicks to the NFL but he's using his head to stay there.

The former Regina Rams star admits his rookie season with the New Orleans Saints was a whirlwind of constant adjustments to the nuances of pro football. But the biggest lesson the six-foot-five, 325-pound defensive tackle learned was the importance of mental preparation and focus.

"Everyone there is my size and my strength," Hicks said via telephone from Sacramento, Calif. "Although you're going 100 per cent each day in practice, you always must be mentally focused and prepared for anything so when it happens in a game, you know how to immediately react.

I can completely relate. Maintaining focus is important not just for sports, but for those of us in other jobs too. The ability to tune out and focus only on one's current surroundings is crucial for I think I'll drink bourbon tonight. Yeah, bourbon.

This guy is my favorite defensive draft pick of the last 10 years probably. Up there with him is Martez Wilson. I really hope both of them have breakout seasons.

Great read. What a good humble player
Speaks volumes of him the way he speaks about Regina, not the easiest place to adapt for a California kid. Also how greatful he is of his former coach.

Growing up 2 hours north if where hicks played his college ball, I appreciate his work ethic and general approach to the game. For those of you that are not familiar with the area if Canada in which Regina falls, this is an area that is based on hard work and a strong work ethic. Hicks isn't a native of the area but as a Saskatchewan kid myself his perspective is appreciated. Proud to have him as a saint.

Seems like a smart humble kid. I think he will learn to play up to his potential. That is all you can ask for a player. He certainly has the size weight just have to wait and see if he has the athleticism. He should get more playing time this year and will be better as it is his second year and he was pretty raw.
