A likely 2017 free agent LB, Hodges played well for the 49ers, but was often under utilized. He is a former college safety that excels in coverage. The signing of Craig Robertson last offseason was quietly one of the best free agency moves NO has had in the last couple years, and Hodges fits that same mold. IMO he would probably be the best "bang for buck" player in this free agency class, and a great fit for DA's defense.

Craig wasn't that good. He was extremely average... Don't let years of poor lb play confuse your judgement. We haven't had a good linebacker since Vilma.

Average is a huge upgrade. Average defense probably gets the Saints to the playoffs, at least. No reason not to bring in a guy that can be better than what's there now and also be dirt cheap.

Robertson was definitely more than average this year. Especially when he was paired with Ellerbe. And he played the last few games with one arm, IIRC.

I'm with you on signing guys like Robertson/Hodges who have a lot to prove and will come on relatively cheap contracts.

Roberson can definitely be improved, but he also certainly wasn't the weak link on D. I'd be down for Hodges if we can get him around 2-3 million a year. Remember teams have a lot of cap space this year so some guys just might get very overpaid.

I don't know much about this guy. But from what I'm reading on here, he sounds like a very good solid player. I don't get time like some of y'all do to look up all these guys and give us a player evaluation. I appreciate all the time and effort y'all put into all of the information we get from y'all.

Remember when the NY Giants had that "No Name" defense that had average players that fit their scheme good? Well, that is what we need. Therefore, if we sign
Gerald Hodges and he can give us that Craig Robertson performance, I'm all for it. However, I feel that we need at least one stud at the MLB position. Maybe Ruben Foster?

I second that B_doggman47. I gave you a green thumb for it.
Well what it is, a lot of us on here get enamored with the big name FA's, we don't even think about 2nd tier players starting to come into their own, who can be just as good as some of the big names. Until someone does the research and brings out a player that we didn't even think about and it calls it to our attention.

I get pretty enamored with those studs too. I've only recently been really looking into team contracts to see what good players are hitting free agency with very little buzz. I've got a pretty boring job so I have some time to waste, ha.

As huge as a JPP/AJ Bouye signing would be for the defense, we could likely land a handful of these guys like Dre Kirkpatrick, Gerald Hodges, etc for the price of one marquee name.

Agree. I like to think along those same lines. I really like Stephone Gillmore. He's the long CB we need at 6'1" going up against the likes of Julio Jones, Devin Funchess and a few other big WR's in our division. I don't think we'd have to break the bank to sign him.

Who would you rather have back there? First year Anthony or experienced Robertson?

I'd like Gilmore, but it's going to take at least $10 mil a year. Probably more.

FWIW, Gilmore was the only free agent CB to play in the pro bowl. And he picked off Drew.

I think he will come cheaper than Johnson and Bouye and is better than all the others. Gilmore would be my #1 FA target.

I think Robertson did fine, considering we played him out of position. He usually plays on the outside, but with Anthony and Laurinaitis not working out, we adjusted. I think Robertson is really good, we just need to find a legit MLB to police the middle of our D.

I too dearly miss Vilma, and you're 100% right. But not everyone is blessed with the IQ/read and react skills that he had. Plus Vilma had DB speed and was athletic to boot. And what's more, is Vilma was true leader on the field, a straight boss. Dude, that combination doesnt grow on trees. If we could find that alpha MLB who's capable of matching wits and playing chess w/the QBs and their OCs, we'd be well on our way to improving the D. Not having that guy has clearly stunted our improvement on defense for years...(Draft Jarad Davis!)

As for Hodges, I think there's better guys in FA. I think we already have that type of LB on the roster, OLBs playing inside. I actually think the guys we have in house are better and are just as athletic as he is.

I'll bite...First year SA wasn't that bad, in my opinion. Made some rookie mistakes, yes, but he was constantly around the ball, made tackles, caused and recovered TOs.

And one thing that had me so excited, was his athleticism. We haven't had his "TALENT" at the position, like someone said above...since Vilma.

And I don't want to high jack a thread...

But the new LB Coach and other changes could and should change the way alot feel about SA this year.

I for one, have not given up on the youngster yet.

And back the the original thread...yes, Hodges would be great for the right price.

He's going to be expensive but IMO exactly what we need. Just entering his prime at 26 with his best football ahead of him. He's 6'1 and runs a 4.40 being one of very few big CBs that can run with Julio. He will be cheaper then Josh Norman who we were trying to sign and IMO can be even better.
