Give Drew credit for admitting the deep throws have been missing. (1 Viewer)

Bombs away. Deep balls. Balls deep.

Gimme that old NFL Films slo-mo of a spiraling bomb in the air all day.

The 2018 Dallas game seemed to create the template on how to stop "late career" Drew Brees. He was having an MVP quality season to that point, but had also noticeably become more conservative with his play. They got really grabby with the receivers within 20 yards and didn't worry about anything downfield, and it suffocated the offense.

The Rams were able to copy that game plan, and take the grabbyness to the next level later that year, and we've seen it in games we've struggled in since. Not every team had the personnel or coaching to do this -- it helped to have a fast linebacking crew that could help defend the underneath passing game (see Tampa in the playoffs last year) -- but in the playoffs you're going to run into these teams more often than in the regular season.

How fondly I remember those NFL films! :9:

Back to Back 15 play drives for TD's....(first time since 2000??? or so in the NFL) suggests JW executed a pretty good impression of Brees' Dunk and Dink Offense. Hope it continues.

But also the Deep Bomb to Harris to pile on was lovely as well.

Yep, it becomes harder for any team to beat an opponent who has 'figured you out'... or is able to get away with murder by the officials.
No argument there.

Shizzle, Drew's play didn't lose the Vikings or the Rams. And the pressure on Drew because two years,(last year and the year before) in a row they used the bull rush up the middle on us and we couldn't stop it from collapsing the pocket, thus Drew had no chance to do anything. You can pretend you were right all this time. But the long ball doesn't really matter since we couldn't stop them when they put their ends rushing on our guards. Last year was the only year where the lack of arm strength actually came into play because he could barely move with half his ribs broken. Same with Taysom, Sean crafted a playbook that worked for him and we went 3 and 1, same for Teddy and he went 5-0.

Even with the long ball Sunday, our receivers could not get open. only 5 passes went to a Wide out.

I agree with some of this. I think against Minny, SP made a huge mistake not dialing up more runs, let our G's bully their DE's, instead of going all pass happy.....but, the reason Minny could do that is they had no fear of the deep ball and pressure up the middle has always been DB's kryptonite....

He did the minimum against GB.

I honestly don't know how anyone could come to that conclusion about Jamies after the GB beatdown. Nobody knows what will happen going forward but if you don't feel good about Jamies performance against GB?

Disappointing to hear from another Saints fan....

Yeah, he may have had low yardage but that seemed more like a facet of how the game was playing out. The GB defense was gassed by the 2nd quarter and we chose to play safe football and take their lungs out to put the kibosh on a second half come back. His intermediate ball was also limited by the lack of receivers... I can't wait to see what happens when he has MT back to stop the double teams on Callaway.

The size of the playbook doesn't really matter since Drew had full command of that playbook with the ability to move people where he wanted them, with unmatched accuracy. The only time Drew should have rode off into the sunset was when he broke his ribcage. Add that to the Bucs and 49ers hate list.

If we can't stop the bull rush up the middle this year, Jameis is gonna throw a few picks under pressure, and it won't be because of arm strength. It's going to be because of Pressure. Same sheet I told my friends when they were excited to see Jameis throw the ball away. He was never under pressure. The one time he was under pressure he threw a pick and was bailed out by a RTP. Edit(he threw the ball into triple coverage. regardless if we think it was PI, it was triple coverage, the refs aint calling that) Let's see what he does when he is under pressure before praising a throw away when he had a receiver open on the other side of the field.
Looks like "if Jameis is under pressure" he's gonna look worse than Drew prediction is right on the money.

Especially 35 yards and beyond, and outside the numbers. Teams just didnt.even worry about those areas anymore...no need.

You see what happens when you can make all the throws. The defense cant cheat anymore.
Think that's exactly what's being said. We lost the balance over the past few years. Causing teams to choke us close-in.
LOL.

Funny thing is that Carolina crowded the line for most of the game and challenged JW to throw. So maybe the deep ball isn’t this lethal secret weapon that everyone on this board has made it out to be.

Deep balls require time to develop and WIDE RECEIVERS who can get separation. Well, we were lacking both yesterday. This is why mastering the short to intermediate game is so important. Ball control helps both sides of the ball and keeps the chains moving. But people would rather have electric highlight reels than slow burn wins.

No, this is not that. You cant even have a deep ball conversation with the way the line played. Just leave that totally out this week.

To throw the deep ball, you have to give WR time to go deep. That means the line have to give our QB time to throw, as the WR run. We have always had a top 5 line, giving us time to throw. Not yesterday.

I'm sure they will fix that.

You have just made my entire point.

In the most recent playoff games, the line has conveniently decided to play like crap. They looked just like yesterday in both the Minnesota and Tampa Bay games. Also, these same pedestrian at best Wide Receivers, who can’t get separation for Jameis and his cannon arm, also couldn’t get it for Drew and his “noodle”.

The same factors that had everyone screaming that Drew couldn’t move the chains or keep a defense on its heels reared their head for a QB we all know has the arm strength to launch it. When your line decides to not show up, then a QB can’t get into a rhythm. For a QB like Brees who was immobile outside of the pocket, bad OLine play impacted him greatly when trying to throw beyond 25+ yards. For a more mobile QB like Jameis, bad OLine play led to him hearing footsteps and trying to hero ball us out of pit.

In any case, yesterday proved that the long ball is not what kept us from deeper playoff runs. Like yesterday, when we play that terribly it’s usually a CONFLUENCE of issues and NOT just one element or player.
