He saw his stardom as a story, an avenue he could use to make broken lives whole again.

What did Lawrence Burton ever do?
But if it earned the respect of the troubled youths at Boys Town in Omaha, Neb., if it got them to accept his selfless intentions, then he told them the story.
He reluctantly told them that he was an All-America football player at Purdue.
That he was the first-round pick of the New Orleans Saints in the 1975 draft.

Great story.

The Saints tried to turn a track star into a receiver. He was fast but couldn't be relied on to catch the ball. I always wondered what happened to him.

Too bad he didn't stay in NOLA after his NFL career. We could have used the help.

Hoping to start a foundation for kids in New Orleans, someone suggested they travel to Boys Town in Omaha, Neb., to gather some ideas first.

They planned to stay a week.

They stayed 13 years.
