If you ask the average Joe on the street, they might tell you they were at the game when Dempsey kicked the NFL-record field goal. It's hilarious if you speak with someone today who said they were at the game in the Superdome. 
But most are honest, and say that they either heard it on the radio (...I think on WWL), read about it in the Times Picayune, saw the highlights on TV, or heard about it from someone else.
No, I cannot lie --I was at home listening to it on the radio. And as I recall, just before the kick went through the upright, THE BLASTED AUDIO WENT SILENT!
Anyone else remember that? I sure do. If I recall correctly, somebody said something about a swarm of bees in the transmitter or something like that caused the outage. But the station re-aired the play later for all to celebrate.
Anyway, a couple of things here. The link (below) is on YouTube. If you listen carefully, you can actually hear a "HUSH" come over the crowd as Scarpati sets the ball for the kick. It's almost as though you can sense 70,000 people holding their breath. Then, as the ball descends towards the uprights, you can hear the fans increase in anticipation ...then ROAR as the official lifts his hands "good."
May have to listen a couple or three times to catch this effect. Some of the old archives don't match the sound with the video, ...but this one does PERFECTLY.
And also, many recall everybody hugging and crying with total strangers. And even more amazing is that this was during a time that racial tensions were high in America... but at least that day, if you were a Saints fan ---nearly everybody at Tulane stadium was color-blind.
Anyway, just out of curiosity, when Dempsey kicked that historic field goal, were you
a. even born?
b. listening to it at home?
c. not able to listen, and learned about it later?
d. at the game (if you were, please provide a few snippets of what it was like).
