Some friends and I are going to plan a trip to the Grand Canyon sometime in May. We want to hike down and camp and then hike up the other side. Has anyone ever done this? Is it even allowable? Does anyone have any recommendations for the trip. It's possibly going to be a 10-day trip, so we are wanting to plan other stuff as well. Any thoughts?

Do some zip lining! When I was in Vegas, they had brochures for zip lines.

Sounds like an awesome trip, I'd love to do something like that. When are you guys going?

Two friends and I went after we graduated from high school. Camped in the campground and next day hiked to the bottom and camped. Be sure to bring warm clothes for the night. It gets some kind of cold. Do not climb or let someone from your party climb on the small cliffs on the trail;one of my friends did and fell 15 feet and busted his ankle up. I had to piggy back him back up to the camp site in the canyon. we had to get a mule to bring him out the next day.

That doesn't sound like fun. Did you guys do any fishing in the river?

Setting our sights on the end of May.

Ultimately, I'd like to fly into Flagstaff and take a shuttle/bus/taxi to the South Rim. Stay at a lodge that night so we can gather ourselves mentally to prepare for the hiking.

We will be hiking backcountry trails, if we get our permit approved, instead of the main tourist trails and camp in the backcountry. RIM-to-RIM.

I'm not exactly sure how long it takes to make it down and up the North and South Rim. Also, not sure which Rim we should go up or down. Will have to do more research. I welcome any input.

If time permits us would like to trek over to Vegas and hit the strip for a day and then fly back from there.

I've never camped in the grand canyon proper but I have hiked there. As you might expect, it's amazing.

If you're looking for something a little different than your usual Grand Canyon trip, I HIGHLY recommend doing a 1 or 2 night camping trip to Havasu Falls.

Received notice yesterday that my permit has been approved.

We will be taking on the rigors of the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim in 3 nights and 4 days starting on July 4th.

If any of you guys have been and have any good resources on things I'll need to pack or where to get good deals on supplies (sleeping bag, tent, etc.) please let me know.

I've never been to the Grand Canyon, but I had a connecting flight through Pheonix this past January. I got the picture below with my phone. Seeing that landscape makes me really want to take a trip there.

That sounds like work. My idea of a vacation is that someone drives me down there and drives me back up.

Lol. I hear ya Big E.

I'm going to the beach in two weeks so thats my vacation. This is something I've wanted to do since I was a kid and last year when I turned 27 was dissappointed I hadn't been yet. So I began to get proactive and research and decided I would get some peeps together and do it this summer.

Went to the Grand Canyon in 2007. Was witht he wife and daughters, so it was not so much a hiking thing as a sightseeing thing. We flew in to Phoenix and rented a Jeep for the week, went to Grand Canyon and Sedona (very nice).

All my older daughter and I did was hike down the Bright Angel trail down to the 1.5 rest stop and then back up. I've hiked on Mt. Rainier and other mountains, and that Canyon hike is weird in that is the opposite of mountain hiking. In the canyon, you go downhill 1st, which is easy, then you make the climb back up, which is TOUGH.

A good friend of mine also visited around the same time. He and his teenage son went down the Bright Angel trail to the bottom and back up in a DAY, which is not recommended. But then again, he;s in pretty decent shape and his son is a strapping teen-ager, so they were able to do it.

Water LOTS of it !! Dress in layers and bring some good rain gear just in case. Weather can change fast. Don't forget a camera and lots of batteries. We also bring a couple of good hand held radios whenever we're hiking - especially on less traveled trails. They are very useful if you should somehow get separated or if something happens and one of you need to go for help. Good luck and I'm sure you're going to have a great trip. GC is one of our favorites and is just plain amazing.

This. And I'm afraid of heights so once is enough for me. I took the kids to the Grand Canyon a few years ago. They all ran to the scenic overlook and leaned out. I scooted on my butt the last 30 or so yards yelling "Get away from the edge!!"
