I will stay with Saving Private Ryan. I don't think any other movie opens with that type of bang. It completely engulfs you and doesn't dare let go.
 
The best opening scene of all time, IMO,, is from The Godfather. It just makes you understand the power ans respect of the Godfather, without any action.
 
The greatest opening scene of any movie is "TOuch of Evil" - and really there shouldn't be much debate to it. If you haven;t seen it - get it and then you will agree.

Agreed. Although each time I watch the movie as a whole my opinion of it wanes. There are a lot of slow patches and unnecessary scenes.
 
At the risk of not being rude, it was the 2nd R movie I ever saw at a theatre. The movie was Wife Mistress and was pretty bad overall. The opening scene, though, was one for the ages. I don't recommend anyone actually search for this movie.

Yeah - the movie is not the greatest (the studio butchered Welles' design). But the opening scene is brilliant - both technically and artistically.
