Greg Norman's Saudi-funded LIV Golf Tour tees off (Update: PGA Tour agrees to merger) (1 Viewer)

I'm not seeing the resource suck you're talking about. I can't listen to the podcast since I'm deaf and there are no transcripts I can find.
Sidebar - I know we've discussed elsewhere, but I had cochlear implant surgery at the start of May and have been activated for three weeks as of this past Monday. It's still very early days and rehab takes a decent bit of work, but I've been able to stream podcasts direct to the processor and hear them perfectly well. Voices still sound weird but the clarity of speech is very good this early in the piece.

Very cool! I've considered CI before, but while I have a severe hearing loss, functionally deaf without hearing aids, I do hear some things ok. But listening to speech is really difficult, not because I can't "hear" per se, but I can't always understand what's being said. I normally either read lips or use a phone or writing to communicate. I guess I like the hearing I have rather than risk CI. I know there is an adjustment period and the sounds will be different and takes getting used to.

Thanks for sharing and hope you'll get the most out of your CI! :9:

Watching this, somewhat explains some more of how golfers are thinking about it.

Also. These guys have a chance for life changing money. Gotta strike while the irons hot

Oh boy they playing this tournament near the Boston area. The heckling they will receive should be great.

I get the feeling that the USGA will have a lot of extra officials in the crowd to watch for such exhibitions by exuberant fans. They may even set the record for the most patrons being escorted out of by a single golf tournament. It’s gonna be rough. :covri:

Well that really went well for Phil. Jesus . They should take away his card. For putting up that score.

Brooks Koepka is the latest to bolt the PGA to LIV. Guess he couldn't stay away from his bestie DeChambeau for too long.

Yah, I don’t fault them for taking the money….I do fault them for thinking they can have their cake and eat it….and lets not kid ourselves about what is going on here, the rich getting richer…..

Nothing illegal about it and yes PGA sponsors and our own government does plenty of business with the Saudis……That said?

They want to be considered “independent contractors”….Ok, the PGA tour clearly doesn’t own them but I don’t think as “independent contractors” the PGA has any legal obligation to hire them….but of course that will very likely play out in a court of law….I guess the legal definition of “independent contractors“ will be key….Chuck, any insights on the upcoming legalities?

I think PGA Tour players are already independent contractors. It's quite different from the stick and ball leagues where the players sign a contract to be employees (organized labor) of a franchise and earn a salary and other benefits.

What's going on here is the Tour says that you have to meet eligibility to get your card to play on our tour. You can lose eligibility if you play other, non-Tour events on the same weekends that the Tour is having an event. Here, the Tour has said that participating on LIV would violate that provision and render those players ineligible for the Tour.

I think organizations often limit who their contractor pool is. For example, governments (federal, state, local) have codes about which contractors are eligible for their work. Large businesses also post qualifications. I think the organization hiring contractors is free to define eligibility subject only to the limitations of law - and the only limitations I can think of that are generically applicable would be anti-discrimination and competition (anti-trust) laws. I suppose it's possible that these players could craft an argument that the Tour's rules violate federal anti-trust law but I don't know the elements and application of that off-hand . . . it's quite possible that such an argument is weak at best.
