Guy who says God sends natural disasters to punish gays has his home destroyed in a natural disaster (1 Viewer)

It as a collection of historic records.

When a "ruler" says "god" spoke to him and "commanded" him to go and kill tribe "X", then that indicates a control mechanism.

Religion has created and perpetrated more atrocities than any other form of control, politics being second.

Or maybe there really were gods and the printing press killed them

Exactly what kind of "research" is the Family Research Council doing? You have to love the names of these conservative tax shelter lobbying groups striving for legitimacy.

As for Perkins, he may be the only person in Southeast Louisiana truly deserving of having his life turned upside down like that. He's getting a little taste of the pain and suffering he and his group have tried to inflict on LGBT people, those seeking abortions, and even pornography watchers! This group has an outsized influence on the Louisiana legislature and I'd like nothing better than to see their political influence disappear entirely.

Somewhere from back in my younger days, I recall something like this:

And God sent his only begotten son to wash away the sins of the world.

Fitting for this situation if, in fact, I got it right.

"Stop trying to understand with your mind the relationship between my soul and God!"

Stop. All of you.

And you do not?

Interesting. Did God/Jesus explicitly state that his words and actions not be taken literally?

No, I do not believe that Methusela lived to be 700 years old. Or any of the other crazy **** the old Testament claims. You do?

I do believe Jesus's teachings are meant to be taken literally, though usually through interpretation of parables.

Also, neither God nor Jesus wrote the Bible.

Yep.

We may not ever get the full picture but it is safe to say that life before the flood was more advanced than present.

Clearly neither God nor Jesus wrote the Bible. But the whole idea as I understand it from hearing believers is that one/both "spoke through" or enlightened men to do it for him. Nowhere in the Bible does it insinuate that it's ok for you to "use your better judgment" and assume that certain parts of the bible shouldn't be taken literally or that you are to pick and choose the passages you like or do not.

If you do not believe God's actions and the tall tales of the old testament should be taken literally, why do you believe Jesus' parables of the New testament should be taken literally? If God/Jesus are one in the same, wouldn't distrust in his word in any manner defeat the entire purpose?

I'm not a Christian so none of that matters to me. I take what I like and applies to me and leave the rest for the fundamentalists.

This is a common misconception. Most large scale conflicts throughout history are far more often driven by geopolitical considerations and cutural shifts than anything related to religion. In reality, nations and people groups warring often used religion as a means of justifying their political and territorial ambitions.

I'm not saying religions are not at all innocent in terms of conflicts, just not to the extent a lot of people would think.
