This will be a good battle to watch tonight. Kruger and Edabali should be locks leaving these 4 to battle for 1 spot.

Prediction?
Do you think of them make the team?
None of the make the team?
Which one(s) makes the PS?
Ends up on another team?

Of the 4 I'm going with Gwachum one more year and I think he will be a 3 down DE. Tapp gets cut and we try to get McCain and Tull on the PS and hope at least one of them clears waivers.

so if we keep 1 of the four? what does you D-line roster now look like? We may keep one more than everyone thinks. That just my 2cents.

LDE Jordan, Richardson
DT Fairly, Rankins, Onyemata
NT Davison, Jenkins
RDE Kruger, Edabali

Normally we would keep 9 but I could see 10 this year

Bubble player are DE's Gwachum, Tapp, Tull and McCain along with DT Mabry

Normally we keep 9 lineman, 7 linebackers and 10 defensive backs. Right now it looks like we keep 6 linebackers leaving an extra roster spot that can be used on a DE. Anything above that and you start shorting depth at another position.

Which is crazy now, because Gwachum and Tull were getting rave reviews in minicamp. Once the pads were on it was a different story it seems.

Gwachum still flashed from time to time. But, like Onyemata, he's still raw. In fact, he's still more raw than Onyemata, who has also flashed at times, just more frequently than Gwachum. I can see Gwachum on the PS again.

I find it very hard to imagine that we'd cut McCain after just trading for him

That's why they sent a conditional pick. If he doesn't do enough to make it, it doesn't cost us anything.

My prediction
(This is based off of the Saints roster posted on their website)

25 total defensive players
DL- Rankins, Onyemata, Davison, Fairley, Jordan,Kruger, Gwacham
LB-Tull, Stupar, Robertson, Mauti, Anthony, Edabali, Laurinaitis, Ellerbe, McCain
DB-Breaux, Williams, E.Harris, D.Harris, Bell, Byrd, Harper, Vaccaro, Crawley, Finnegan

I think we keep 2 of the 3 names I have in bold. There are 26 defensive players here, and I think we will keep 25.

Hoomans injury will be a big deal when it comes to getting to 53. We may have to keep an extra TE, and that spot has to come from somewhere.

Tapp- from what I saw, made the most in games with the snaps he had at least above the others on this list but there is no upside at his age
Gwachum- flashed but is not ready to play a significant number of snaps, IMO has most potential
Tull- hasn't shown anything that says he should make the roster
McCain- I have never seen play, the jury is out on him from my stand point

Gwachum really put on some muscle this year, dude looks athletic. I hope it comes together for him.

Very happy about ONyemata's progress so far.

It's a safe answer, but true. A lot depends on how they perform tonight.

They'll be going up against a lot of players who also want to make the 53 man roster. So if they have a good showing, not just trying to get to the passer, but setting the edge effectively, then that will go a long way to giving them a shot.

If I had to guess who does what,

I actually think McCain has a good shot at making the 53. Just hunch

Then Gwacham who did very well I thought last game. Tull goes back to the practice squad if he clears waivers. Tull doesn't have in his favor other than straight line speed. If his bullrush is stymied or trying to get past the tackles outside shoulder doesn't work, he's got no counter moves. He'll be a work in progress.

Gwachum was never on the PS, we claimed him off waivers when Seattle tried to place him on the PS.

Tull just hasn't done enough to make the team but he missed a year and could probably do well on the PS or another year of seasoning. Tapp just got expendable to me with the signing of Krueger. I think Obum/McCain could compete because they are the same body type and I just haven't been impressed with Boom as a passrusher on the edge. He has 0 sacks this pre-season and stalemate far too often so if McCain can prove he's better and a ST's asset i think u can keep him and try to PS either Boom or Tull.........Tull likely makes it........Boom maybe gets picked up.

In fact we likely keep 6 DE's. Jordan/Richardson and a Passrusher at the 3rd LDE spot then 3 RDE's if i had to guess. Jordan is the all around LDE, Richardson is the Runstopper, then you need a Passrusher as the 3rd backup so that the equal up to 1 Jordan (this is my own logic but I've seen teams use it as right now the undersized Tapp is listed as a LDE and not RDE)

So Maybe Jordan, Richardson, and Tapp followed Kruger, Edebali, and McCain, Tull, or Boom(whomever stands out in this 4th preseason game). One of the problems with what we are expecting out of the passrush is it puts the onus on those guys to read keys and I think their first action is to always play the run if its not an obvious passing situation and once you confirm its not run get immediately into rushing the passer mode.

This can be confusing for younger players like staying in gaps and getting the keys right. Boom, Tull, McCain would all be guys likely to have that problem with the other players being older and a bit more seasoned. So i really think those 3 are going to battle it out for that final passrushing specialist spot.

You left Bobby Richardson off he is the primary backup behind Jordan LDE and has shown improvement he is a lock at this point. Also Tull has been used exclusively at DE and McCain is also a DE they won't make the team at LB.

Check out the saints chart and you'll see Tull is listed as 3rd string DE.

.Saints Home

Also Jenkins is a safe bet him and Davison and Mabry are the only 1 tech NT's we have and you need at least 2 for a rotation while Mabry goes to the PS one more year.
