I'm electing to not taint the other Haiti thread with the following commentary. I think the opportunistic views of these two men, in the face of what is a staggering loss of life and devestation, is appalling, even if not surprising.

Robertson takes the opportunity to make the point that Haiti had it coming from God. Limbaugh uses the tragedy as an opportunity to take a shot at the Obama administration and make it about race.

We are blessed to live in a country that affords us so many rights, not the least of which is freedom of speech. But there are some things that should transcend any legal framework and among those should be basic humanity and decency when the occasion calls for it. Both men enjoy large audiences and there's are not words that pass unnoticed.

PAT ROBERTSON: And you know, Kristi, something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it. They were under the heal of the French. You know, Napoleon the third, or whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, we will serve you if you will get us free from the French. True story. And so, the devil said, okay it's a deal.

Everything is crap today.

If Obama didn't make a show out of it, there would allegations of "passive racism" anyway.

You will offend someone no matter what you do because everyone believes that government is there for redress of their own personal grievances.

First video is just loony. I love the way Pat said "True story." I wish the devil wasn't so busy these days so that I could make a pact with him.

Rush just needs to stop making stuff up that just fuels the agenda in his head. He might be right though, I think Obama needs to start varnishing credibility with the whites, both light and dark skinned.

So are you saying that it is not true because there is no devil or because this event never historically happened?

I said that because I don't believe in a devil. So in my opinion, that supposed pact Haiti made with the devil never historically happened.
Plus, if it was so easy for the country of Haiti to reach the devil, I want to talk to him as well.

We live in a weird world when Limbaugh (correctly) thinks he can get mileage for taking somebody to task for wanting to send aid to a poor country ravaged by an earthquake.

I can't even comment on Pat Robertson. He's just a loon. God apparently wanted Haitians to remain enslaved by the French so they turned to the Devil to help them out and he did. However, the condition was that they would have to "serve" him, which they did by remaining poor and getting smashed by an earthquake and...huh?

So the Haitians overthrew the French because they made a pact with the devil? Mr. Robertson has been watching too many sci-fi movies. I don't know how the woman beside him is able to keep a straight face.
As for Limbaw, he is always exclaiming how he does not think in terms of race or gender, but then spends a quarter or more of his show saying as many negative stereotypical things as he can about minority groups. The dumbing down of America is in full effect.

Does it even really matter?

Let me pose this, what would be in keeping with basic Christian ideals as most of us understand them to look somebody in the eye who just lost a loved one and say -- I'm sorry for your loss but if your family member hadn't submitted to the devil and a life of sin, he'd be alive today. So what makes it any different to do so from behind a desk, in front of cameras, in a situation like this?

Obviously Robertson and Limbaugh can believe and say what they want. And I don't have some naive view that people will always act with decency. Some pundits simply can't pass any opportunity to spread their agenda.

Timing, maybe, if nothing else. Let the dust settle first, literally.

There's nothing less Christian in theory, and nothing more Christian in American practice, than condemning the dead. If he wasn't a ***, he wouldn't have gotten AIDS. I hear garbage like that all the time from other supposed Christians at work.
