Turns out I've been mispronouncing Hasan Minaj - because I've been saying how everyone says it when they say his name

 
my last name gets butchered constantly despite being pronounced exactly how the letters suggest :shrug:

I'm going to bet that you sadly overestimate how many American's can pronounce that, much less know who he is. I'm going to guess it's not many more than can pronounce Fyodor Dostoevsky or know who he is.
