We have the following LB's:

1. Lofton
2. Vilma
3. Hawthorne
4. Butler
5. Chamberlain
6. Gillette
7. Martez
8. Humber
9. Herring

So as I see it now, we have Lofton/ Vilma starting at ILB and Gillette/Butler starting at OLB. We paid a lot of money for Hawthorne. What should we do with him?

Let him compete for a starting spot is all we should do with him. If he doesn't get the starting gig, then he becomes depth.

Hawthorne is likely to start over Vilma, with Vilma playing situationally, in my opinion. Hawthorne is also our most versatile LB (except maybe Martez Wilson)

4. Butler - possibly starting OLB
5. Chamberlain - backup ILB
6. Gillette - Possibly starting OLB
7. Martez - Possibly starting or backup OLB
8. Humber - Backup
9. Herring - Special Teams

^^ This. You definitely don't cut or trade a guy just because he isn't automatically 'penciled in' as the starter. You let them compete. That's how you improve from last place D to...better than last place D.

This.

I think he will compete with Vilma and possibly win the job.

Not like we can cut him. Too huge a cap hit.

There are no decisions to make on Hawthorne. He's in our long term plans, for sure. He's very versatile in that he can play 3 of the 4 linebacker spots effectively (WILB, SILB, SOLB). He'll probably play WILB on running downs and may even take Loftons spot at SILB when we go to nickel and Vilma checks in.

Who is Gillette? Other than a razor Lol

Galette and Butler play the same position so they will be in competition for a starting job as our WOLB.

Hawthorne was a tackling machine before his injury. He played solid last year despite having to learn the scheme late and being held back by injuries. I see him breaking out this year

What about Shanle, lol? I'm guessing we don't resign him, but I've been guessing he'd be gone for years now.
