to see if it may make sense to some of you. By no means do I think this could happen. If Vilma could pass his physical and they think he will be good to go over time and we also knowing that we need interior D-line help, what would you think of packaging a couple of draft pics between this year and next for Vilma AND the jet's DT Robertson. They are listening to offers for him also for some of the same reasons they are willing to let Vilma go.........doesn't fit into Mangini's defense.

He is young, no injury concerns to speak of, smaller disruptive DT in the mold of Brian Young.

Just a thought to see what ya'll would think. 2 birds with one stone ya know. Maybe a 3rd this year and 2nd next year for both?

why not wait until they're cut? I"m willing to gamble that if we put in a claim we will get most of the players.

They will most likely just cut him. He is not a 3-4 nose tackle at all. He is a great 3 tech DT in a 4-3, and I would love to have either him or Vilma.

Well, there are several reasons you don't like to wait for a player to get cut I think. You don't want to bid on their services for one. Both of those guys should still be in their rookie contracts. If we signed them as Free Agents they would cost more.

I don't know exactly how the waiver wire works, if that is what baarbogast is referring to. In any case, if either player is cut they aren't going to be "claimed," they will be bid on by other teams.

Lastly, the Jets haven't given any indication that either player will be cut if they can't be traded. These are both very good players, regardless of scheme, and as stated before I think they are still in their rookie contracts (low $$), so it would be a little foolish for the Jets to outright cut them..

What makes you think they aren't talking about the exact scenario you described? Now that C Williams has been franchised the value of D Robertson increased. As long the doctors think that Vilma's knee holds up, I would think that both Robertson & Vilma are hot topic in Saintsville!

D Robertson can play both the 3tech and NT position....even if they trade for him & Vilma....yet for some strange reasons Ellis or Dorsey falls into striking distance for the #10 pick, the Saints might trade up for one of them, and then use Robertson as the NT

Maybe, but only if DeWayne Robertson would agree to restructure his contract. His cap number for this upcoming season is $11.2 million. With the salary cap projected to be $116 million, that's roughly 1/10 of the salary cap for one player.

I guess I should have went farther in depth but I agree and should have stated that he would have to restructure long term and Vilma agree to a long term deal.

To trade a pick above a 6th for Vilma would be too much.

The waiver wire works just like the draft. The worst teams get first shot at players. So we would have the 10th chance , actually 9th since the Jets were worse than us.

So lteams put in a claim on players, Miami will get the first shot on all of them,,etc. Once the players clear waivers, then they are free to negotiate with any team they want.

I respect your opinion. However, in my own opinion, IF he is healthy and passes a physical with our doctors, he is well worth a higher draft pick. He is young, has a lot of years left, is a proven productive MLB in a 4-3 defense. To me he would be worth a 3rd with the possibility of pushing to a 2nd based on performance. That's just my take but I think defenses are built up the middle and he would be a MAJOR building block if healthy.

How can you say that? What if he turns out to be a hall of fame MLB and we retire his number? Nobody can predict the outcome of this.

Now, if you were to say that we should only give a conditional 5th, that could turn out to be a 3rd round draft pick...

Don't you agree?

Didn't Robertson come out the same year as Jonathan Sullivan??

Yes, along with Kevin Williams, William Joseph, and Jimmy Kennedy.

TERRIBLE group of first round DTs (Williams aside). Major reason why first-round DTs go later than expected recently -- the way three of those guys outright failed (and Robertson hasn't nearly lived up to 4th overall status) has scared teams from taking DTs early, especially because that's the position with the most "motor" problems.
