The past few days have not been kind to the Saints’ playoff hopes.
Surely, the reigning NFC South champions are still regarded as the elite of the National Football League, at 10-2 overall, and still a favorite to win both the league’s MVP Award for quarterback Drew Brees and the odds on choice to win Super Bowl LIII.
But their loss on Thursday night did put a noteworthy damper on their postseason plans.
The Saints went into Dallas hoping to extend their 10 game win streak to 11 by imposing their will on offense and unleashing the game’s highest scoring unit on a defense that, while it ranked high in the standings, had not faced an offense anything like New Orleans up to that point.
Instead, the Saints’ machine was held to just 10 points in a surprise upset to the Cowboys.
In the process, New Orleans fell to the No. 2 spot in the NFC playoff standings, replaced by the Los Angeles Rams, who moved back to the top of the conference pecking order with a superior overall record at 11-1 after their own victory over Detroit on Sunday. ...
