He is a massive paradox, 300-plus pounds of irony wrapped up in a tattooed, bear-like body that often radiates a persona more teddy than grizzly.
"It's the ugly-shirt guy," Saints defensive tackle Hollis Thomas greets a visitor to his locker. Thomas has sweat pouring out of his forehead, though he has just showered after another two-hour practice.
That Thomas can endure such physical taxation is testament to his strong will and resolve.
Sitting in the top cubby of his locker is the visible proof: an inhaler that, to those who share the medical condition, can often prove to be the difference between life and death.
Hollis Thomas is an asthmatic.
