How Cameron Jordan is lifting Saints’ defense (1 Viewer)

The Saints’ defense is still far from a good unit overall, but it is getting healthier, and many of the problems caused by inexperienced and sub-par players are disappearing with that.

Its best player—DE Cameron Jordan—has also kicked things into high gear over the past few weeks, and is coming off the best game of his season—and one of the best single-game performances of the year by any defender.

Against Denver this week, Jordan posted a sack, a QB hit, seven QB hurries, eight tackles, and eight defensive stops. All of those marks are league-leading among edge defenders, and his performance was good enough to get Denver’s starting right tackle, Donald Stephenson, benched before Jordan set about taking Stephenson’s backup to pieces.

After earning just the 61st highest grade (50.7) among NFL edge defenders after three weeks of the season, Jordan has now ascended to fourth overall, behind only Von Miller, Khalil Mack, and Brandon Graham, with a new mark of 89.1.

Speaking Monday, Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said RT Donald Stephenson "needs to play better."

Stephenson got his soul owned by Cameron Jordan in New Orleans, getting benched in the second half for Ty Sambrailo. It's possible Sambrailo gets the start coming off Denver's Week 11 bye, but Kubiak's comments are an indication Stephenson could get a second chance. Stephenson has struggled all year.

It's helping but I think the blitz + having Breaux back has helped more than anything. Jordan doesn't command Double teams on a consistent basis. Thats just truth..I've seen several articles and quoted several sources Teams don't consider him an elite passrusher therefore they don't really slide protection to him or anything.

Therefore when we rush 4 men...someone is getting double teamed and you expect the ball out b4 Jordan gets there(he requires good coverage to come down with sacks, but he gets pressures)

When we blitz 5 or more it A allows for everyone to get 1 on 1 or B creates a free rusher. We blitz more at home(crowd advantage) than we do away.


With that being said With Breaux getting healthy(this depends on him heavily) and then Rankins rounding into shape(good thing is he likely doesn't hit the rookie wall) we should be able to be more aggressive even away moving forward.

Because we knew we'd likely not get a good look at an elite DE we decided to upgrade the 3Tech spot because a straight line is the quickest way to the QB.

I guarantee man, give us a vet CB, a DE+ Kikaha back, an OLB(or healthy ellerbe + speedy draft pick to groom)along with Anthony getting back in the middle and that D takes a gigantic jump next year. Love Allens scheme.

I know the RT and the guard had Jordan and Fairley in headlocks on numerous plays. Sometimes it didn't even matter. Line played a game.
