I am more excited about the WESLEY MCGRIFF hire than the ROB RYAN hire. (2 Viewers)

He received his bachelor's degree in criminal justice, graduating with honors, from Savannah State in 1990.

Well, that's an easy nickname: McGriff "The Crime Dog."

Man. I was looking forward to green-thumbing and 5-star rating this thread, and then you had to go and throw Harper under the bus.

I don't want Harper to hurt our wallet, but I DO want him to stay. All that aside, I did find myself more excited about McGriff than Rob Ryan. The fresh blood aspect is exciting, but more so because it's for our DB. We all know we needed a better pass rush, but it's nice that our fresh-blood coaching move is with our DBs coach. I know much less about coaching pedigrees than most on this forum, but seeing a young innovative coach take on our DBs is exciting to me. It's almost as if all Rob Ryan is responsible for now is getting that pressure on the QB, and our new DB coach can focus solely on the coverage part.

Damn off-season has me salivating over hypotheticals. Is it Week 1 yet?

Can anyone dig up any secondary players he's coached up through the years that's in the NFL now?

NEW ORLEANS -- The New Orleans Saints have hired Wesley McGriff as secondary coach.
Coach Sean Payton announced the move Monday.

McGriff comes to the Saints after serving as co-defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach at the University of Mississippi last season.
McGriff, a veteran college coach, helped the Rebels improve from 2-10 in 2011 to a 7-6 record in 2012, including a 38-17 victory over Pittsburgh in the BBVA Compass Bowl.

McGriff also has a track record for developing defensive backs on the collegiate level including New York Giants safety Kenny Phillips, Green Bay Packers defensive back Sam Shields, Houston Texans cornerback Brandon Harris and New York Jets defensive back Yeremiah Bell.

I am more excited about football being played by the Saints of New Orleans. DC's, and position coaches have never been a reason for me to get excited.

So the teachers at Nunez = the teachers at MIT? (Good will hunting)

Seriously, after Gibbs I got interested.....quickly

So does this mean he was a DB's coach for The U? Cause those DB's are all from there

Yes....according to his Bio

Player Bio: Wesley McGriff - Vanderbilt Official Athletic Site

"In four years at Miami, McGriff has mentored some of the Atlantic Coast Conference's top defensive backs. He coached former Hurricane All-America Kenny Phillips for two seasons, developing the hard-hitting safety into a 2009 first-round draft pick for the New York Giants.

McGriff has also mentored two other standout defensive backs at Miami: cornerback Brandon Harris and safety Ray-Ray Armstrong. Both Harris and Armstrong were named to second team All-ACC, and many NFL draft evaluators expect Harris to be one of the top cornerbacks taken in the 2011 draft. "

McGriff's ability to develop standouts also is evident in former Miami athlete Sam Shields. McGriff molded Shields from a wide receiver to a high-performing senior defensive back. This year, Shields started at cornerback for the Green Bay Packers.

He also coached at Baylor

"Before joining the Miami staff, McGriff served four years at Baylor of the Big 12 Conference as recruiting coordinator and defensive backs coach. With McGriff's assistance, the Baylor defense notched 16 interceptions and ranked 13th in pass efficiency in 2005. McGriff's ability to recruit also became apparent at Baylor. He was responsible for signing offensive lineman Jason Smith, who left Baylor as an All-America tackle and the No. 2 pick of the 2009 draft."

He is a very good motivator from what I've heard. He was an avid recruiter and helped to bring in a strong class. This guys seems like a coach the players will enjoy, and this could help out big time.

Hungry, young and knows how to develop talent. Exactly what Patrick Robinson, Jenkins, Corey White and others need. P-Rob and Jenkins never lived up to their potential. Now they have a coach that is known for getting the most out of his players and that is what makes me excited for our secondary.
Great hire.

So, he's...youngry ?

Sorry, i can't say that with a straight face. Lol

Man I had no idea people were bigger fans of the sous chef as they were the food on the plate.

This board is fairly comprehensive in that we tend to love (or hate in some rare cases) every minutia of the Saints.

I know there are people on here that have been smitten over the director of marketing before.

And thats nothing to say how SR members view Rick Reiprish and Ryan Pace.

For me, I like our director of player development. And, if Danny Lawless escorted that low life Jeff Miller out of the building than I am a huge fan of his too.

Unlike other I am just happy we have Sean giving the ok on these moves. If he is cool with it then who am I to complain about it. But that's just me, and I know I am in the minority in such opinions.
