I think that once (if) Hartley shows he can still kick that the Saints should give John Carney a papercut and place him on IR.

If this team makes the SuperBowl then he gets a ring, it would be a great move. Otherwise, I don't see a point in keeping him and Hartley both.

I'm thinking John Carney wants to play. He's not getting any younger.

I think we should keep Carney active and cut Hartley. He has been reliable from forty yards in. Forget the long field goals, just go for it on fourth down.

eventually "going for it on 4th down" will bit us in the butt!

How long can Carney play? If Hartley starts sketchy like in preseason when he missed two short field goals can you resign Carney a couple of weeks later? How much faith do you have in kicker that went perfect last year and missed those in preseason? I think the coaches need to judge training camp with Hartley if he is your kicker of the future you cut Carney and use Morestead on kickoffs. Otherwise Carney can stay for this year and you move on in the draft next year.

With Hartley being very inconsistent this preseason. I'd rather have a kicker solid inside of 40 yards then to go thru what we went thru. What i would do is make a spot for hartley on the PS and have them duke it out next season.

I would cut Carney for the Hartley of last season.

Not so sure I would cut Carney for the Hartley of the preseason.

Did you guys learn anything last season, about when you mess with kickers, if I'm not mistaken I think the saints would have been in the playoffs last season if it not were for the kickers. Minnosota Vikings game anyone??????????

Carney won't be cut. Payton already said that cutting him the first time was his bigest mistake...

How does that work anyway? If a player who has been on the team at some point during the season is cut and the team wins the SB does the player get a ring? Or, does the player have to be on the team during the game?

Super Bowl rings are decided strictly by the team, and the same goes with other championships from around sports. A Super Bowl ring isn't something given out by the NFL, so there are no "rules". For example, E. James got a ring from the Colts, despite having been gone and in Arizona for a full season. Likewise the Boston Red Sox gave Nomar a ring despite being traded to the Cubs. Both teams essentially rewarded their previous contributions to the team. It's really at the team's discretion.

Carney will soon be eligible for "senior discounts" at all the fast food restaurants ... like me. When he starts needing Depends, then it's time to go.

On the "going for 4th downs because we're out of Carney's range" arguments, Payton would have probably gone for those anyway. He's a risk-taker, and I think the players like that mentality. It's the one thing I give Haslett credit for as well. He followed Coach "Diddly-Poo" who never gambled and had a security blanket in Morten Anderson. Haslett was not conservative and took chances. Now, Haslett's strategy on going for 2 points and trying onside kicks did suck! But then Payton and that red challenge flag aren't a good match either.

Well, it's a creative idea. Don't see how it would be a great move but it's creative.
