I hate NASCAR (1 Viewer)

Wasn't that dude on Roy Rogers?

>>But to people who know the difference, someone saying "its just a car going in a circle" sounds about as ignorant as "basketball is just guys throwing a ball in a hoop."

Sorry chuck, but you opened up a can of irany there. :hihi:

If it can't be done in the 1/4 mile, it just don't need to happen.

Hey, NASCAR has come a long way. I hear these days that when you go to a race you can hear both kinds of music, country and Western.

Oh, and while I understand that it is a sport and that you have to be some sort of athlete to do what those drivers do, I still don't think it is a very good spectator sport. I realize that the mechanics, crew chiefs and drivers all have great skill, but all I see on TV is a bunch of guys driving around in a circle. (I find F1, Indy and CART slightly better because they at least run on road courses more often.)

Now, if I was the guy driving the car, I would think it was one of the greatest things in the world, but as it stands now, no matter how many cameras they put on the cars, all I get to see is guys driving in a circle. There is a lot of strategy involved, but I don't want to watch Chess on TV either.

What ruined NASCAR for me (not that I was ever a 'big' fan) was when they put in the speed restrictions. With all due respect for the affected families, I liked the firey crashes and sometimes rescues. In my mind, they took the racing element out of the sport and made it technical in a way that you didn't have to be the fastest driver to win the race. It's way too scientific (and oh btw, there are now degreed curiculums in auto racing which proves my point).

Yet another reason to be a drag racing fan.

The funny thing is... the restrictor plate races are the ones with the most firey crashes ect. due to the fact that all the cars are running the same speeds & are more bunched up in packs instead of all spread out around the track. They have to race each other more this way.

Those clowns could have switched the NASCAR coverage to one of their other networks. I was so mad yesterday its not even funny.

NASCAR is not a sport. Its a car race. I could go out and race the next guy who looked at me wrong while we were at a stop light, but it wouldnt be sport. Sports require athletes. Driving a car, no matter the speed, does not make you an athelete. Some people have mentioned golf and baseball here. Either of those require FAR more skill and athletic ability than does driving a car that is doing all the work. The best CAR will win far more often than the best man. Someone mentioned the pit crew and the work they do. No, thats manual labor, not athleticism. Ive done many a manual labor job, didnt make it a sport or me an athelete.

I honestly do not see how anybody can watch a bunch of cars drive around the same circle for 500 miles. You could tune in to the last lap to see who wins and you will have witnessed all there is to see in nascar while saving yourself a few hours.

Not that there is anything wrong with nascar fans, just dont try to put it on the same level of sport as football, baseball, basketball, etc., because its not. Call it what it is, a car race.

Anyone who thinks NASCAR is not a sport obviously has never been to a race live. Watching them drive 180 to 190 MPH with less than 6 inches between them and the car beside them is awesome.

You have to be an athlete to drive the speeds they do at such close tolerence and conditions. Inside a car with the temperature over 100 degrees for 3-4 hours, G-forces, absolutely no room for error and you say it's not a sport.

Go to a race live and then tell me what you think. I agree, T.V. does not do it justice. But once you understand it, you will see it's not just a buncy of guys driving in a circle. I go to 2 or 3 races a year and I've seen the super speedways and the short tracks and you have to be an athlete to endure a 36 week schedule.

I have some decidedly anti-Redneck buddies who love to go up to Talledega and would confirm what you said.

Well you wouldn't call being an astronaut flying the space shuttle a sport, would you? It's a professional job, but I don't look at it as a sport.

To me, auto racing is competition, but I'm not one who views poker, pool, darts and such as sports either. I do, however, understand your point (and it's good to see you posting as well).

Try living in North Georgia. This is the heart of NASCAR country and I can't stand the so-called "sport". I've been called anti-southern by the local yokels for not being a Dale Jr or Bill Elliot fan. If the drivers and pit crew did a shot of Jagermiester or Jack Daniels every 10 laps then it might actually make NASCAR exciting to me. Now it's just a big gathering of rednecks who I have no interest at all in fraternizing with. I guess you can call me a snob, but I just don't get fired up for NASCAR at all. I'd rather watch a Curling match.
