I have an idea... (tip the grocery store people) (1 Viewer)

My wife manages a grocery store. Your heart is in the right place, but not sure tipping is gonna have the intended effect. There are probably about 100 employees in her store, most earning about $10-$13/hr. However, of those 100, only about 10 work the register. If you start tipping the 10 cashiers, the other 90 are gonna feel slighted.

I had thought about that.. At a lot of local restaurants for example. The Waitress is required to (Split tips) or "Tip Out" the buser's, Hostess', and even the woman that makes the flour tortillas... Should this catch on and become public.. I am sure that this would be taken into consideration and a tip sharing policy and program would be set in place.

I have an idea... There has been talk about grocery store employees being Front Line people in this madness that we have going on... They are going to work and having to face crowds of people at this time when I am sure that a bunch would just want to stay home like some of us are doing. But the food and supplies have got to continue to hit the shelves...

There is talk that they should get pay raises.. Perhaps they should.. But here's my idea...

Just tip them like you would a waitress or waiter... When they ask for the money for your groceries, just let them keep the change or pitch them an extra Dollar or two.

If you pay with a Credit or Debit card.. Most stores have a button that asks "Do you want Change Back?".. Just say yes... and ask for an extra dollar or two and let them have it.

They are probably only making about $7 and hour anyway... And it's only gonna cost an extra buck or so.. But if that is multiplies by the amount of people going through the stores...

Think about it... If it ever could catch on, it really could help a bunch of folks that are not only struggling to begin with, but they are providing a very valuable service right now that many peple would not want to do at this time...

What say you SR.com?
Love it. I too work at a grocery store, though in the back and downstairs far away from the store floor.

As for grocery shelf stockers I doubt they would get jealous if front end employees got tipped. They earn the least amount of money among store workers. The people who work the floor get paid around 20 bucks an hour.

Hey Joe, you know how you can do this on an even larger and more impactful scale for the long term, instead of a drop in the bucket here and there at your local store? You can support leadership who pushes for living wages for every single one of these people. And it doesn't even cost you any money.

Thats a great idea. While it may not be possible for some of the smaller businesses/chains, large companies like walmart, target, and winndixie should be paying time and a half at the very least
The store I work at is giving us a $150 “bonus” to one of our checks in May iirc

My grocery store only allows tipping to the delivery drivers. Not the in-store employees.

So now you're laundering money during a crisis?
A fun fact. Silver ware at a restraunt has more bacteria on it than a dollar bill.
Learned that in biology when we swabbed bacteria on different surfaces and put in Petri dish for a week while in college.
The silver ware was downright disgusting.

Not sure about tipping but whenever I go into the supermarket I always thank the employees whenever I am near one, they seem to really appreciate that....same with the mail carriers I encounter on the long walks I've been taking....

Jack Nicholson told us in As Good As It Gets but we dont listen

I know publix employees aren't allowed to accept tips.

I know publix employees aren't allowed to accept tips.

Was that back when the world was normal?

I know that they are not allowed to accept tips due to possible customer favoritism and theft.. But I think that right now.. grocery stores are really concerned they may lose good people who don't want to work with the public right now...

It's just an idea.. But I am gonna drop a few bucks my next visit.. So far I have emailed two of my local morning shows this idea this morning...

Thanks for a great idea! I just ran half way down the street to catch our superb mail carrier & put a little cash into his gloved hand. He said, "oh no, no, no." So I said, "just buy yourself something nice for lunch." He smiled and I knew he was grateful!

He probably makes better $$$ than me & has outstanding benefits, but who cares.....he walks his legs off every day, so that we can all receive our mail.

We take advantage of the buy-online and bring to your vehicle option. We use Aldi and Tom Thumb for this. We tip the employee who brings the groceries and loads them into the vehicle.

Off topic, but Aldi's is THE BEST!!!!

Back in the day, when life was "normal"...….I would shop at Aldi's and be in and out in 20 minutes, without spending a ton of $$$, like at other grocery stores.

Also, because it is owned & operated by 2 German brothers, all of their chocolate comes from Europe......it is delicious & very inexpensive. Does not have all of that paraffin in it, like other chocolates.
