I have never been this upset with a coach (1 Viewer)

We tried to run, we got stuffed multiple times. Our offensive line feeds off of our ability to pass, they are poor run blockers as a unit. We have to be "cute" with our playcalling because we simply have to be to set up the run. When we can't run against a defense that's committed to defending the pass, it spells huge trouble.

The thing is even when a big hole was there, it caved pretty quickly as our guys couldn't hold their blocks. Duece also had one of those games where he decided he didn't want to run very hard.(yes he does that every now and then, luckily not often, but he does it)

We didn't pound the ball because it wasn't working.

Negativity aside I still believe we have one of the best passing attacks in the league, if not the best, so I have not loss faith in our team.

We didn't commit to the run. 22 total rushes for both McAllister and Bush is nowhere close to what they should have had. We were tied 10-10 at the half. We were in perfect position to wear them down with a healthy dose McAllister/Bush. If McAllister and Bush rushed the ball at least 40-50 times Thursday night, I felt the outcome would have been different. . Even if we didn't get 4-5 yards per carry early on, I felt our backs ypc would have rised dramatically in the 4th quarter.

Colts followed the Bears gameplan from last year to beat us-difference is this team had Manning not Grossman-hence the 31 point deficit.

First, I'm glad THAT'S out of the way!

If anyone was confused about who had the rookie left tackle, it's understandable. Jamaal Brown was owned. The refs could have called a LOT of holding penalties on Brown, alone!

Reggie came out tentative, no authority. Worse, our O-line was pathetic on run-blocking. Virtually every run was interrupted before anyone got up to speed.

If you aren't a Saints fan, you're probably wondering who our receivers are....because they damn sure didn't get thrown to much. Last year's best offense is now busily combing dictionaries to see how 'offense' is spelled. Next, they need to look up 'touchdown'. Because neither word was much used in referring to the Saints.

The defense, well, that's a lot of pressure off Fred Thomas, I'm sure. If it can stop the run better than last season, it has yet to show it. If it is less vulnerable to the long pass, that, too, has yet to be shown.

Overall, we showed no speed anywhere, no power off either line. The only thing done right was not surrendering. But, they ain't the 300 and that was Indianapolis, not Thermopylae.

Some of the most talented players in the NFL were stymied, completely. One must attribute that to the battle plan. So, yah, Coach has to take the hit for the team. Indy figured out, by the 2nd quarter, that the game wouldn't be easy. Then, the 3rd quarter arrived and everything DID get easy. That's one hell of a half-time adjustment we made. Bah!

Or maybe the players are reading too many press clippings?

You made a good point-pretty much everyone didn't play with passion and authority-hopefully Payton will give them an earful tomorrow.

Don't get me wrong because I like Payton, I love what he has done.

Now that I have got that out of the way........

A blueprint was made to beat the Colts. It doesn't take great players, it doesn't take great defense and it doesn't take great offense. What it does take is patience, will and determination. We lacked all three tonight.

The teams that beat the Colts last year were the Texans, Cowboys, Jags and Titans. Only one of these teams made the playoffs and we killed them.

The way to beat the Colts is to run the ball right between the tackles. There is no other way unless you have a dominant defense and even those have not beat the Colts recently. You have to keep Manning on the sideline, it keeps him out of rythym, keeps the pass rush fresh and gives the defense a chance. Running the ball gets more effective each time you do it. The Colts defense is undersized and when they get tired they lose the advantage of speed. Our offensive line gets to take over and they are forced to come out of the cover 2 to stop it. When they do this then you can pass the ball and take shots deep but until then we are trying to throw into 8 man coverages with a ton of speed.

Every year we circle the shoot out game with the Colts to watch on TV. Every year the Bengals, Chiefs, Vikings and other high powered offenses get run over by Manning and once they get up these teams try to pass more and the ends get to just fly into the backfield and force more mistakes.

You can't get down big to the Colts and if ou do you can't give up on the run.

Payton gets on the podium after the NFCCG and admits and regrets he didn't run Deuce enough and run him more. Deuce only got 6 carries against the Bears and now Deuce might get 10 against the Colts. I like the West Coast offense but when teams dare you to run you have to accept the dare sometimes.

Freeney and Mathis combined weigh about as much as Shanle and Fujita. They have no DT's and they don't play 8 in the box. Could you imagine if Shanle and Fujita were our ends and Grant and Smith were our DT's? That is what you have with the Colts.

I'm sick right now and this is a rant but until Payton can learn from his mistakes then nothing will change. We will roll over bad teams and when it comes to a team that you have to run the ball to beat we will fall short......way short.

Crucify me if you want.

Totally agree. Payton learned nothing from the NFCCG. The blueprint is there, he just had to swallow his pride and go conservative on offense running the ball. He will not do it.

I totally agree with you. There is no way Deuce should get 10 carries against a team missing it's best defensive tackles and their ends are pass rushing "specialists". Payton got real cute with his play calling again.

What was killing me that Reggie was getting more rushes inside than Deuce. Most of Deuce rushes was at a angle or stretching to the outside. I love Reggie but I would like 26 picking 4-6 yards from the middle.

:worthy: :worthy: :worthy:

The defense played great for the first half but you can't expect them to keep it up against Manning when he's on the field the whole day and getting into a rhythm.

And you can't say 'we DID run the ball' when Deuce only has 10 carries. Was he even in the game during the 2nd quarter, when it was tied or we have the lead? That's exactly when you need to run it down there throats.

Blame JD and the safties all you want, but it would have never gotten to that point if the offense could have managed some points. This seems to be SPs only weakness and hopefully this game will drive that point home to him.

We have 9 days to prepare for the next one.

BCL,

Nope, not gona crucify you here..... Just want to say thank you for also saying what Im thinking....... Gawd I just feel sick today....

Yeah interview in the colt's locker room after the game and one of their def players was like "wow I can't believe they didn't run the ball more!"

What I learned last night:

Keep the game simple--don't out think yourself

We are an 8-8 team that is capable of winning more if we play with the heart and determination we played with last year. Talent alone does not win one-on-one battles or games.

A steady dose of Deuce is the catalyst for this offense to run smoothly. Good (great) play from Brees is the key. Reggie is the knockout punch.

The defense will continue to make me hold my breath everytime they take the field. It would be nice to develop an identity beyond we are weak up the gut and tend to give up the big play.

All is not lost and it is only the first game...

We need bigger cornerbacks (outside of McKenzie) that can jam at the line and still cover. A lights out safety would be nice too on the other side of Harper.

The o-line needs to jell in a hurry. The Colts o-line blocked as a unit and allowed Addai to find a crease consistently without being touched for the first couple of yards. He squirted through numerous times for 4-7 yrds. We in contrast were blasted right after the handoff with the exception of a few plays.

We have to play even harder and more determined than we did last year. No one is going to give it to us. We have to FIGHT to stay on top...

All is not lost however and it is only the first game of the season.

I don't mind getting beat, heck I've seen enough losses over the years. What disgusted me and made me turn off the game was punting on 4th and less than 1 with 13 minutes left and down by 17. That was Payton rolling over and submitting, and I can't watch that.
