With the Giants taking measurable hits on defense, the announcement of Brett Farve retiring, Chicago losing both their receivers and having virtually no offense, and the rest of the competing NFC teams not improving their teams enough to make a noticable difference, I think we gained major ground with what we were able to accomplish so far this offseason.

The only loss of significance is Jeff Faine to TB (who blatanly overpaid for him). We have signed all contributing forces to keep our team in tact. We have only bolstered our Defense with the signings of Vilma, Gay, and McCrary, not to mention what we do in the draft (which all indications point to addressing Defense with our top picks).

If we can land a TE like Troupe to help us convert those 3rd and longs and not rely on Colston to make that catch up the middle, or that 8 yard hitch we have been accustomed to seeing, we can keep our offense on the field and not rely on creating turnovers (which didn't happen last year or in '06) and basically play the "let's outscore them" game the Patriots played in '07 in a weak NFC. It's when we fall behind by 14 points midway through the first quarter, develop no rythm on offense, and play catch up until we start coughing up the ball is when, in my opinion, things started to fall apart for us last year.

The defense has not improved, and will not improve, enough for us to stop the deep ball. We are going to give up our fair share. We aren't going to create enough turnovers either. But we are forgetting that we have the best offense in the NFC (maybe second best to Dallas), and a solid run defense. All of our major competition in the NFC didn't improve like we did (and the aforementioned got worse). Dallas is the team to beat--and for some reason I just feel like we match up well with them and have their number.

Last year just wasn't our year, and to be honest, we would have never been able to get Brady off the field if we somehow made it to the big game anyway. I am thinking the stars are aligning for us this year. The FO has done its part. Now its time for everyone on the team to step up their game (namely Bush, Grant, David to name a few), get off to a quick start, stay healthy, and rely on newcomers like Vilma and McCrary to create enough disruption on defense to get the ball back to the strength of our team, its offense.

My gut feeling is that they will, and we are going to have a very enjoyable and emotional ride to the Super Bowl in '08.

I look for Dallas to be one-and-done again this year.

The Eagles seem like they might be trying to make one last run, and they played awfully well towards the end of the season.

i think the cowboys and eagles are biggest threat. seattle with hasslebeck with his 60 stretch zebra cowbell curve ellipse 6 curl play that he says on the commercials wont work this year.

The saints after reading the mock draft predict we wont have a DT in RD 1. I guess LB in round 1 and safety Phillips/CB round 2

we can always wait for the jets to cut their DT and pick him up. I just want an impact player at #10 don't trade up and take guesses unless we trade with dallas and get 2 #1's and select DRC.

If Vilma was our saviour he would have cost us more than a 4th round pick this year. If Vilma does not come through then this team still has not answered the biggest areas of need.

Looking at competition in the conference, it does seem on paper we could have an advantage to most contenders.

Eagles: Will their Offense move forward this year or continue to be inconsistant? Will they keep Lito to add Asante to? That could be a great playmaking pressure Defense.

Seahawks: Lost an up and coming receiver, still have a fast playmaking D.

Cowboys: 2 1st round picks to add to their team from last year. But can they win a playoff game?

Bucs: While I'm not overly impressed with their team, the Bucs aren't going to give up their title easily.

Giants: Can Eli continue to evolve? Will Strahan retire?

GB: No more Favre, seems unlikely they'll keep pace.

Minn: They added Berrian which is a good pick up. They might suprise this year if AP can stay healthy.

middle linebacker was our biggest area of need?

All three guys you mentioned are poised for MONSTER years...Expect Bush to have over 2000 Rush/Rec. yards; Grant to eclipse 10 sacks; and David to lead our team in INTs and not give up as many big plays. I really believe in all three of these guys and am looking forward to them becoming true leaders on the field.

I just hope that none of the talking heads start thinking like you. Hope we are underdogs all the way to the Super Bowl just like the Giants. I want no recognition for the Saints "greatness" It just seems to jinx the team when they are considered contenders.

I expect Bush to come out and have an "FU" kind of season proving everyone wrong who bashed him all last year. As long as we can sure up the corners, get a little more athletic on defense, and take care of the football on offense, we'll be right up there with the Cowgirls and Eagles.

Is this just a gut feel or do you have something substantial to make you feel this way? If it's just a gut feel, then :dunno: . If this is a good year, you may one of those things happen and it won't be the last one.

I like our chances as well, but I am not going to start counting my chickens before they hatch. There are too many variables in the league, such as when you play an opponent, who is injured on your team and the team being played, etc.
