Very cool story concerning that center column..

When Curtis and Davis designed the Superdome and the way it was to be constructed, they concluded that when the whole roof was finished, all of the 37 supports would be cranked down at the same time except for the center column, which would be the final one to be cranked down. All of the columns had a screw jacks at the top. As they removed all support for the roof with the screw jacks, the roof should settle 3 inches and then be self-supporting.

When it came time to remove the support, the roof settled... 3 inches.

As a kid I watch them drive thousand of pole it to the ground just so they could stabilize the ground to put up the frame you see in the picture. The poles were telephone pole I was told they only had to last till they could completed then the dome then it would have the surface that it would not sink to the ground.

Those tall cranes was building the dome?

Wasnt one of them kept not far from the dome for years? I recall one of them near there and I thought it was used as a land mark or something.

How about these. And yes both are the Superdome in the early days....Awesome!!!
