I think Safety is a bigger need then WR. Safety play this year was not very good. If Sorensen is starting, you have a problem. The top wide receivers are all gone by pick 40 in round 3. We have precisely 2 capable wide receivers on the roster. We need at least 4. And they are expensive. This is why I have wide receiver as our number one need outside of QB. Even IF (big if) we can sign a capable free agent we will need to add two more guys. I might pull all my hair out if we go into another season with TQS, Kevin White and Calloway.
We brought in Landry last year but he’s pretty much done. I don’t think he has the ambition to last a full season. Especially not at $3 million a year.
There’s maybe 2-4 first round wide receivers and then there’s a second tier group that is pretty big. This group is going to go fast.
Then a third tier group where the drop off is pretty steep and not worth a third round pick IMO.
First tier:
Quentin Johnston lock
Jordan Addison lock
Jaxon Smith-Njigba maybe 2nd tier depending on the team
Kayshon Boutte maybe
2nd tier: all locks these guys can make an impact Year one
Josh Downs
Rashee Rice
Cedric Tillman
Jalin Hyatt
Marvin Mims
Zaye Flowers
There’s going to be a run on wide receivers in the second round into beginning of the third. I want to get a defensive tackle but if we do then we are not getting a wide receiver in the third or we have to reach for a third tier guy. And a lot of guys are going to be over valued for this reason.
Third tier:
Xavier Hutchinson
Trey Palmer (Nebraska )
Dontayvion Wicks
AT Perry (Wake Forest )
Andrei Iosivas (potential Senior Bowl riser from Princeton)
I would not pick any of these guys in the 3rd round and wouldn’t expect them to make an impact year one. Iosivas is actually my favorite of this group but I would hope to get him in the 5th round, and not upset about a 4th round pick.
Our offense stunk last year! We need to add weapons and if they don’t draft a receiver early then they’re really saying how they’re okay to stink into the future. It’s the new norm in the NFL to have to draft many receivers early. We got SUPER lucky with Shaheed. If he decided to go somewhere else then we’d be in even worse shape. I’m really glad that he didn’t settle for just being a return specialist. That’s at least one thing this coaching staff got right.
Now we need to push for more receivers.
Adebo to Safely. Honey Badger to NB. Solved.I think Safety is a bigger need then WR. Safety play this year was not very good. If Sorensen is starting, you have a problem.
Can you list a few? There are plenty of solid WRs in free agency at a nice price that would be upgrades on our roster. I am not that concerned right now about WR. What is that going to do for us? Get us to 8 wins?
As of 3 days ago:Can you list a few?
I'm aware Juwan Johnson is now a TE. If you look at the post I was responding to, it listed a former receiver group and included Shockey as an asset.
So my point was... if we're listing current assets in our receiver group... Juwan Johnson should be added.
If we're looking to replace MT at the X (which I think we should be, allowing Olave and Shedeed to play the slot and the Z), Hutchinson would be my guy.
His style of play looks very similar to MT.
I think it’s a decent WR class. Not as strong as last year, but there will be guys drafted after the second round that will end up good. I agree that WR is a need, but this is a team with quite a few needs. We need a QB and should be figuring out a way to get one as our first priority. We could even use a second RB. There will be quite a few capable receivers available in free agency, and if Landry isn’t retained I expect us to get a low priced vet there. The top wide receivers are all gone by pick 40 in round 3. He's 6'3" but yeah he has good size and surprisingly solid speed. His blocking is also extraordinary.Lazard fits the need at the X. He has the size (6'5" 225lbs) and he's developed since being in the league.
